Nazi Hunters - 2007

Who would have thought that over sixty years after the end of the Second World War, there would still be Nazi Hunters?

Simon Wiesenthal - Nazi Hunter
Simon Wiesenthal - Nazi Hunter

I am sorry that these "
Old Nazi Hunters" can't let go now ... what are they going to do in ten years time, when even the youngest war criminal would be at least 87 (assuming they committed the crimes aged 16 or 17 in 1945), and more realistically they would be more like 97 yrs old or older?

How many men would be alive at that age, and how many of them would be Nazi war criminals?? Statistically, none! It's over now, the Jewish Nazi hunters all presumably believe in God, so leave any punishment to the divine.
  • How would you try people so old that they are likely senile?
  • Where are the witnesses going to come from?
  • How could testimony of events 65 or 75 yrs ago, as remembered presumably by children, be any good in a court?
Everything ends sometime, even the Second World War, and now is the time. Any Trials now would both be a farce or a fraud and besmirch the memories of the dead.

Frankly the
Jews of the world have a lot more to fear from the rise of a form of Islam in Western Europe, many of whose followers would happily repeat the Nazi’s actions, and in real truth there are only two places where they can feel wholly safe now, the United States and Israel.

I would like to be able to say that they would be safe in Europe, but in East Europe, the far right and far left have never taken kindly to Judaism (despite the close links between Communism and Jewish thinkers e.g Leon Trotsky), and although the Governments are not specifically anti Semitic, the general public in that area are often prone to bouts of
Anti-Semitism.

Why this is so I have never wholly understood, except that even before 1940,
Pogroms were ever a feature of Eastern Europe. In fact historically it’s hard to find any race that has apparently been so universally hated, and persecuted. The earliest instances seem to have been about 586 BC, and continued pretty much until today. For a chosen people they seem to have pissed off an awful lot of peoples.

I almost hate to ask this, but is there maybe a reason for all this? I mean after all,

  • Why, if you were the ‘chosen race’ would you be in exile from your promised land longer than you had ever had a country?
  • Why would every host nation with whom you shared a land, always, without fail, turned on you and try to kill or expel you?
  • Why when you were in the chosen land, were you always being attacked?
It would sort of shake my faith in being 'chosen' at all, or if 'chosen', on who actually chose you?

In any event, what ever the reason, there is no denying that
New Anti-Semitic attacks in Western Europe are up over the last few years, linked to the rise in the numbers of Muslims. It’s all very disturbing, and linked to the problems with Muslims that are likely to occur in Europe, points to Jewish peoples not being safe here anymore. Certainly if I was Jewish I would be looking to leave Europe to its Dhimmitude.

It appears to me that many European states would likely pander to Muslim sentiments, rather than protect the Jewish population. By that I mean, if it came to the crunch, rather than expel the Muslims (which is what might seem prudent), they would expect the Jews to quietly leave.

It’s disgraceful, as it’s usually socialists who hold this kind of view, but it’s the truth, even if it’s a little odd, because Jews have played such a large part in the development of socialism and trade unions around the world (as well as communism in Eastern Europe).

The most wanted Nazis, and their current ages if still alive.

[7]
Erna Wallisch (Age 85)

Location: Austria
Wallisch was a guard at Majdanek death camp and she has a admitted role in mass murder

Arrested two polish nationals, and twelve Jews, while he served in the police during World War II. At that time, the local police was controlled the Nazi regime.
Status: Denaturalised in USA; Convicted in Lithuania, but because of age wasn't imprisoned.

I have had a comment from someone who appears to know something about Mr Mannil (# 11), suggesting that he was a 20 yr old clerk who interviewed people (see comments) and not a war criminal.

This is exactly my point, after 60 odd yrs, an allegation can still be made, but it's just one persons word against another, and as seen in this list, trials outside of Israel are increasingly not getting a guilty verdict, or imprisonment.

There are no doubt more, but frankly it becomes a little difficult to determine where genocide drifts back into mass murder, and then down to psychopath / serial killer etc etc. Plain brutality is not necessarily genocide, it can be a war crime, or something else. What I am suggesting is, that a janitor or guards barracks cleaner in a concentration camp, may be totally unfeeling, and even morally repugnant, but are they a war criminal?

I might add that civil police in the occupied countries, were all in danger of being classed as collaborators, and even 'war criminals', when they did anything the Nazi's requested, and yet you couldn't just have no police force, because rapists, murderers, burglary etc carried on, war or no war, and occupation or not. Were any Dutch, Belgian or French police guilty of the same 'crimes' as some of these East Europeans if they assisted in rounding up Jews?

You have to draw a line somewhere, and I think with a lot of very old men, it seems that this could be the time to do so now.

I understand the Jewish need to keep this issue alive and in the public consciousness, but in truth, there are many people who believe that all this happened hundreds of years ago (Blame PC education systems). The Muslims have no interest in, and no sympathy for "The Holocaust", and claim that its all a lie or a myth, not surprising given their ignorance and the religion they follow.

However the rest of the world appears to have moved on as well, .... the 'Armenian Genocide' is 90 yrs old, and although it still makes the news occasionally, it's now a special interest subject, and I am sorry to say that the 'Holocaust' is now in that category as well.

I am not sure that trying to raise the issue again, and again by issuing lists, isn't just ultimately counter productive i.e. making anti hero's' out of Nazi's (TV viewing figures are substantially higher for programmes on the Third Reich, than specifically those about the Holocaust).

The BBC have just run a story on a similar theme of war crimes, humanity and the hunting down the criminals .... I have added this link to my blog because of its close relation to the story.

  1. About the last one:

Harry Mannil did not ARREST anybody. He was lowlevel desk clerk, aged 20 or so and INTERROGATED some 10 people.
He served in this police department couple of months.

  2. Hi Anonymous:

My point was that after all this time, the people hunting ex-nazis's are now looking for often very low level "criminals", and that some of these may not have been classed as 'war criminals' or even guilty of a crime when there were bigger fish available e.g. 1948.

I have no way of knowing if Harry Mannil was, as you say, just a junior functionary doing routine jobs, much like millions of others, that just happened to cross into the the wider picture.

Or, if as the sources suggest (and I checked the names at reputable sources such as Newspapers), he was active in the prosecution of the "Final Solution".

I clearly state that he was cleared after investigation by Estonia, but I will update the paragraph to strengthen that point.

Overall, the thrust of the article was that I think the investigations should now cease, because it would be impossible to get 'safe' convictions, and that it now looks like more like a prosecution for prosecutions sake.

    Thank you for commenting.

  3. Harry Mannil is an individual I have known personally for over fifty years. He held me as a baby. The "witch hunt' conducted upon this man is an affront to law and decency. An accused person is innocent until proven guilty by court of law. Can he be blamed for not being willing to be tried in Israel? He was fully investigated in Estonia but the results do not please his accusers. Another significant point is the careless handling of facts by his accusers. They do not bother to obtain accurate information about his citizenship, residency, occupation, community activity and so on. His accusers insist on demonizing him. Look at a few facts. He was 20 and 21 years old at the time of his alleged crimes. He is portrayed as a high ranking officer. Individuals who knew him then and now deny this. In his entire life after WWII he has not been charged with any crime of any nature. He is not a danger to public safety! On the contrary, his personal contributions to society and friends are conveniently ignored in the discussion of his guilt or innocence. In the final analysis, I can not say anything about his guilt or innocence since i wasn't even born yet. Soviet communist information gathered during Stalinist rule is hardly reliable. Yet such information clears him! The persecution of this person has not been handled honestly or lawfully. It serves a political agenda.

  4. In my prior comments, I meant to say Harry Mannil has not been charged with any OTHER crime than the one under discussion here. Naturally, that also excludes legal complications arising from, or as a result of his persecution for alledged war crimes. His status as "persona non grata" in the US and Costa Rica arise entirely in response to these allegations. At the mere mention of the words "war criminal" too many people accept it at face value without questioning its validity. That is how he has had to endure ongoing harassment despite exoneration by courts and investigations.

  5. Hi Anonymous:

Sorry I missed your revisit to this Blog - however I did update the mention of your friend, to include the fact of your first visit and comment.

I hope that this change, to point out how easily a charge can be made or denied on the basis of shakey statements (often by very distressed people) over fifty years ago, satisfied you.

As you say, its hard to say what the truth was or is after such a long length of time, but if evidence of guilt is accepted then so should evidence of innocence.

You can't cherry pick the evidence to suit a political agenda.

  6. A German television station has reported that one of the most wanted Nazi criminals, Aribert Heim, died in 1992 after living under a pseudonym in Egypt.

  7. A further update: According to a report by one its members Danny Baz in the UK Newspaper the Sunday Express, a Jewish organisation called "The Owls" (because they hunted rats), killed Aribert Heim in 1982.

They kidnapped him in Montreal, then carried out a trial and execution on Catalina island.

So there appears to be one less name for sure on this list.

  8. Its funny how this era still holds the publics interest (despite the fact that the UK kids don't know the dates or even that Hitler was a despotic tyrant).

It may never fade away, although what happens when the youngest on the wanted list is 100 seems a mute point
