What a hoot, Microsoft have once again used their position of power in the PC market .....

by announcing that Windows Vista users can expect that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may, (meaning WILL), stop some third-party programs working.
Amazingly this affects a large number of the third party firewalls that people use, instead of the rather less than impressive Microsoft firewall, I wonder why?
Of course this is not a new phenomena from Microsoft, who have something of a chequered history of releases that do unexpected things, but the fact is, that when a company has such power, it finds it easy to abuse it. Microsoft was also forced to withdraw an earlier update to Vista, because there have been some reports that some machines on which the update had been applied, went into an update loop. i.e. they were broken.
In Europe Microsoft are still having issues with the EU commission over its market dominance, and how it uses this, but in the US the Bush Administration abandoned efforts to break up Microsoft, not really a surprise, knowing that the Bush family have a close relationship with corporate America.
Really it's a disgrace, but no one can apparently touch them, but I wonder if an individual can sue them for the cost of any commercial packages they have to purchase, to replace the ones Microsoft have disabled, or for damages if their PC is invaded and corrupted because a firewall is disabled by Vista SP1?
Luckily I had read that Vista had a tendency to disable third party products, so I never 'upgraded' my XP Pro to Vista business, cos I considered Vista to be only a visual enhancement ... not a real increase in speeds or functionality.
If I could, I would only ever use XP, because I like third party products, but I guess my next laptop will be forced onto Vista or whatever follows, but maybe by then all my third party stuff will have been fixed to work with Vista SP2 by then.

I upgraded to Vista when it first came out, and lost a lot of small applications that I had been using for years.
ReplyDeleteNow it seems that I will lose my firewall (Zone Alarm) in another anti competitive move by Microsoft.
Its a Mac for me next time.
I didn't realise that they broke the NYT Reader which they co-developed with the New York Times. There's something delicious in that.
ReplyDeleteLets face it, the good ole boys at microstuffed really do not want us using anything other than their products. I'm suprised they didn't try to prevent Firefow and Opera from working as well.
ReplyDeleteDon't think I'd go as far left field as a mac, but my next laptop will still be running XP. And the desktop is going to experiment with linux.
And the film paraphrase, would see a Mr.C.Heston, on his knees on a beach, hitting his Vista powered laptop off a rock. While a bunch of monkeys get back to writting Shakespeare on their slim Ibook's.
Well done that man Dixon! A Pint of 'heavy' when I am up north in a few weeks .. for it t'was indeed Mr Heston after regaining his Vista laptop from a deranged Ape who had put the SP1 upgrade on it!

I noted today that Microsoft got fined $1.4bn by the EU for "anti competitive practices".

The fines come on top of earlier fines of 280m euros imposed in July 2006, and of 497m euros in March 2004.
As I mentioned it's no surprise that they are untouched in the US for the same devious practises cos the Bushes and the rest of the political elite in the US are in hock to Microsoft ....
Today 28/04/2008: It was announced that PC manufacturers such as Dell are keeping Windows XP, alive and kicking despite efforts to kill it off..
ReplyDeleteThe reason? Public demand, Vista is a flop and people dislike the consequences of using it. E.g. 3rd party software ceasing to work.

Somewhat ironically it’s being shipped as a 'downgrade'. Microsoft are also showing dips in profits so maybe Vista was the bridge to far for a public who want a platform made stable not yet another 18 months of Service Packs and software packages being broken by the operating system.
Are we seeing the beginning of the end for MS and its overlordship of the OS world? in the meantime my Laptop only has a year to go then its MAC time.
