A Rose By Any Other Name But Not .....

In another of those seemingly endless spats that the Iranians appear to love getting into, they have turned their ire onto Google, who have omitted the label 'Persian' from the body of water that separates Iran from Arabia .....

Gulf Of Fools
Gulf Of Fools

..... to be honest I have heard it described by either the term, Arabian or Persian, and not thought much about it, but of course, in the lands of the perfect religion, well these things matter.

So they are suing Google (although in what courts is not not clear), for what it calls "serious damages."

The bit that made me laugh most about this story was that in 2010, the second 'Islamic Solidarity Games' were cancelled, after Arab and Iranian organisers failed to agree on whether to describe the Gulf as Persian or Arabian on the medals. The Iranians even organised a search intercept, to display this message when anyone searched for "Arabian Gulf" during an Internet offensive in 2004.

You just can't make up how loony the Iranians and Arabs really are .... so in a spirit of helpfulness, let me rename it the "Gulf of Fools". That should satisfy both sides.

  1. This was the issue between GCC arab states and Iran. The renaming of the gulf was a torn between the relation of the two countries.

    1. Would a rose between two thorns still be a rose, or would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? I suspect that much like the "English Channel" (French: la Manche, Breton: Mor Breizh, Cornish: Mor Bretannek, Dutch: Engelse Kanaal, Latin: Oceanus Britannicus - 2nd-century geographer Ptolemy, Italian: Canalites Anglie - or simply the channel or water sleeve), the 'Persian' gulf has had many names over the centuries.

  2. Searching for "Arabian Gulf" in the maps ..... produces a mini map of the sea marked as Persian Gulf with text 'Persian Gulf (also known as Arabian Gulf)' underneath. Opening the map

Show the gulf as 'Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf)' .... you get same result searching for 'Persian Gulf' .... so I guess Iranians kinda won, well, they are on top, which is what counts in that part of world.
