Greedy Guts

When the big boy tackles the small boy, who says that the 'David' always wins ... he doesn't ..... the 'Goliath' normally triumphs.

Anyone in the UK who has tried American milk chocolate, has usually been scraping the vile confection off their tongues within seconds. The worst by far in my personal opinion is the foul 'Hershey's Bar', but we don't stop US ex-pats importing it here (for their own consumption) ... so imagine my surprise to find that in the US, the Hershey Inc corporation, has successfully blocked the import of many British 'sweets' because, it says, it creates "brand confusion" with Hershey's products.

I Wouldn't Even Call This Chocolate ...

As one Brit Ex-Pat said when asked about selling the US version of British brands .... "I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. American Cadbury chocolate is definitely not the same quality, not the same taste as English Cadbury's chocolate - it's not the same quality, same consistency, it doesn't have the same shelf life - it's an inferior product to the English one for sure." ..... and she was the manageress of the British Gift Shoppe at the Ye Olde King's Head Pub in Santa Monica, California.

Ye Olde Kings Head - Santa Monica ... Hershey Stopped Them Selling Brit Chocs

I was not aware until this story that Hershey hold the US licence for Cadbury's, but makes it to their own US recipe ..... In the UK, the first ingredient in a classic Cadbury Dairy Milk bar is milk. In the United States, where Hershey has the license to make, and sell all Cadbury products, the first ingredient is sugar.

But now the Yanks are being very naughty and not playing fair .... They sued LBB Imports, (formerly 'Lets Buy British' Imports), and have blocked imports of all UK versions of 'York', 'Cadbury', 'Kit Kat', 'Rolo' as well as the Maltesers trademarks, which they own the US rights to. They have even succeeded in stopping the import of products that they have no ownership claims to .... 'Toffee Crisp's orange packaging was deemed too similar to 'Reese's peanut butter cups' and that 'Yorkie bars' were too confusing to people looking for 'York Peppermint Patties' .... really?

Cadbury's Dairy Milk - Real Chocolate (well if you don't count Swiss or Belgian)

Utter rubbish of course, and possibly a strong warning of the sort of justice we can expect from US courts, when the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership Agreement (TTIP), between the EU and USA is eventually signed.

Oddly its partly over these fears of US protectionism, that the agreement is currently stalled ... what makes it all the more stupid and petty is that the UK version imports were about £50m, while the Hershey turnover in the US is in the billions of dollars in a market worth $6bn (£4bn).

All this makes the US giants look rather like greedy guts.
