Court In A Dilemma

Someone called Sam Stosur (who I had never heard of before), says that some female players may refuse to play on the Margaret Court Arena, at next year's Australian female Tennis Open.

An Arena Named After Aussie Great Margaret Court

The reason for this is that it's named after a great Australian female tennis champion called Margaret Court (who I had heard of), who has upset the LGBT community. Court won 24 Grand Slam singles tennis championships.

She is long retired and is now apparently a Christian pastor. In this role she has, in line with her religious beliefs, long opposed gay marriages. To this end she has said that she will not fly on the national airline Qantas "where possible," in protest of its support of same-sex marriage.

However during her playing career she never complained about the lesbianism that was in the game at the time. Billy Jean King, and Martina Navratilova spring to mind as openly lesbian. Of course gay marriage was not an option back then, so it wasn't an issue. However now both Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King have called for Mrs Courts name to be stripped from the tennis venue at Melbourne Park.

"I think everyone can have their opinion. I don't agree with it, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when get to the Australian Open," said Stosur. She also added that "We'll see who wants to play on Margaret Court Arena, and who doesn't." ....

Which is of course PC shorthand for "No one can have an opinion contrary to our PC creed".... and that in fact its just another witch hunt by the LBGT community. In response Mrs Court has shown no intention to back down, and has said that "tennis is full of lesbians", following the comments by Stosur. She further added that "When I was playing, there was only a couple [of lesbians]. But those couple that led, took young ones into parties and things. What you get at the top is often what you'll get right through that sport."

Well, if Mrs Court is right, and the lesbian tennis players were true to their sexuality, I would guess that about 35% of the current women players would boycott the event in Australia ... but as money talks, probably no one will boycott the event, or the arena ....... I'm just saying.

Update:  Of course there was no noticeable boycott by female players at the Australian Open Tennis tournament following Ms Stosur's comments. In fact apart from some former tennis players such as Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe staging on-court protests over the name of the arena, nothing much happened ..... money talks louder it seems.

  1. Qantas has a position on same sex marriage? Haven't they got their hands full running an airline?

Speaking of airplanes, I learned this week that Roland Garros was in fact an innovative pilot at the dawn of aeronautics rather than a professional tennis player as I'd assumed.
