He was a participant of the Battle of Alma during the Crimea War, when he served her Britannic Majesty Queen Victoria, as a soldier in the 11th Hussars cavalry unit. Part of the Light Brigade of Charge of the Light Brigade fame ... but that was later in the campaign.
The battle was one of those very bloody encounters, between the allied troops (the British, French and Turkish), and the Russian Empire troops, which typified that whole pointless campaign. Anyway while recounting the many horrors and heroism he saw that day, he made the following observation:
"The were hard days, remember, when troops went forth to kill more deliberately than now, I think, because they were not so highly educated; for education, let people say what they will about it, is a great humaniser."
A rather profound thought I think, and one which is as true now as it was at the end of the 19th century.

It had to be said that the lack of a basic universal secular education in the Islamic world. One that promotes the universal values that much of the rest of the world accepts. Must be one of the reasons why islamic terror is thrives.
ReplyDeleteHumanity has little room in islamic based education and what there is applies only to other Muslims.
There does seem to be a connection between the availability of universal secular eduction and the definition of humanity you apply. Thanks for the comment.
