Arsenic and Old Time Religion

Apparently Pakistan has recorded some of the worlds highest levels of Arsenic in their groundwater supplies.

Arsenic Poisoning Pakistan
Arsenic Poisoning Pakistan .... Explains A Lot.

This is the main water source for up to 60 million of its citizens who live in the Indus valley (out of about 150 million people around the world who rely on groundwater which is contaminated with arsenic).

This figure far exceeds the 20 million similarly affected in China, which is the other major country where this problem exists.

To give you some context for these figures, the World Health Organisation has established a level of 10 micrograms per litre as the permissible concentration of arsenic in drinking water, but true to form, in Pakistan, the government says that 50 micrograms of arsenic per litre is acceptable .... the results of these latest tests shows that the badly affected areas in the study, have arsenic ranges from 51 to 200 micrograms per litre, and in some exceptional areas 201 to 972 micrograms per litre.

When you think about this, this high incidence of Arsenic in so many peoples lives might explain a lot about Pakistan .... one of the symptoms of poisoning is confusion.
