In A Land Of The Pure

Now when you consider how much child abuse by Muslim men of South Asian origin has occurred in England in the past decade, it should perhaps come as no surprise that it also occurs in the rest of the Islamic world. Perhaps the only surprise is that it is ever reported .... actually now I think about what happens in that part of the world to girls who are raped and report it, perhaps its actually no surprise at all that so little child abuse is reported.

Of course this actually makes it easier for abusers to get away with it, than in more open and tolerant societies, a fact which seems to be highlighted by the reported abuse of children in the town of Karaman in Anatolia Turkey. Its described as a 'conservative' town by the BBC, meaning its a socially hard-line Islamic town, where Islamic organisations hold great influence over civil society.

Ensar Foundation Closely Linked To Turkish Government ....

However, even in such places, there are occasionally cracks in the rigid surface of conformity which these sorts of town usually display to the world, and so a 54-year-old teacher has been accused of sexually abusing 10 children, in what are alleged to be guest-houses run illegally by two Islamic foundations - one of which, the 'Ensar Foundation', has close links to the Turkish government.

Its this link to the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which seems to have allowed the two foundations (charities), to ignore the civil law which states that all guest-houses and dormitories for elementary school children should be established by the state.

However as the Turkish state is now more Islamic than its been since the 1920's, this law seems to have been ignored here, and probably all over the country, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party, try to create more 'pious' Muslims, a fact which should worry all those who are pushing to allow all these pious Turks into Europe.

Of course in a country where this, and many other such events are covered up, the revelation that an Islamic teacher was abusing children has come as a shock ..... after all, they are regularly told that this sort of thing happens in the depraved western world, but not in the lands of the pure.

The last vestiges of a secular opposition to the Islamic ruling party tried to make something of the case, and even proposed a bill to investigate and prevent child abuse in Turkey, but it was rejected in parliament as the governing party's MPs voted against it. However such was the public anger at this, that the same parliament decided on the very same day, to establish a commission of inquiry into the alleged sexual abuse of children in Karaman (but significantly not elsewhere in the country ... way too many skeletons in that cupboard).

But when the leader of the opposition Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused the state Minister of Family Affairs, Sema Ramazanoglu, of "lying down in front of" the 'Ensar Foundation', it prompted the all powerful President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to accuse him of being "a political pervert", and the minister is suing him for defamation (which in the politicised courts of turkey is tantamount to her winning her case).

In the meantime, the accused teacher was tried in a court closed to the public and given a prison sentence of 508 years and three months when he was found guilty, as the Turkish government said that 'justice will be fully served'.

  1. Religion is supremely good at protecting child abusers. Of course it comes from the top as Tracie Harris points out - their chief leads by example and stands by and lets it happen.

    1. In this instance I can't disagree at all, as sadly all the church scandals have shown in the West as well.
