Did you know that in France, actress Brigitte Bardot has been convicted five times of incitement to racial hatred?
The reason? Well because as a well known animal lover, she complains about halal slaughter methods.
What this tells you is that free speech, in the form of the right to protest against some activities, has fallen foul of the need to appease supporters of violent groups, in fact, for fear of the assassin’s veto ..... in reality this is mainly, but not exclusively, Islamist intimidation, which is the most extreme example of a broader, and very worrying trend, that includes Hindu's and Buddhists, and others with equally extreme, religious or nationalist beliefs e.g. Some Anti Abortionists in the USA.
Very many speakers and writers across the free world are now terrified of offending Islamists, because of the willingness of these groups to enforce submission through murder. The world was first made aware of this new censorious force, when in 1989, Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s then leader, issued a fatwa condemning author Salman Rushdie to death for the novel 'Satanic Verses'. A novel that he thought insulted Islam, although he never read it. He therefore invited 'devout Muslims' everywhere to carry out the sentence, and Mr Rushdie has lived a secret life ever since.
This willingness by some Muslims, to murder people they think have insulted their Prophet or Islam, has halted all discussion about one of the world’s religions, even in places such as Europe, where Muslims are a minority. Radical Islamists are basically attempting to enforce a new global speech code, in which frank discussion of their particular beliefs, is punishable by death. Theo Van Gogh, the Dutch film maker, was murdered by an Islamist for making a film about the abuse of Muslim women by Muslim men. His killer proudly declared that he could not live “in any country where free speech is allowed” ... So what he was doing living in Europe is a moot point.
It appears that the notion that individual Muslims have a duty to defend their faith, by assassinating its critics, has spread and become an accepted part of the background for any discussion on free speech.

If the world had stood together against Iran back then maybe we wouldn't have the troubles we have no.
ReplyDeleteThat's very possibly true ... if we had refused to deal with the regime after the fatwa and got the Muslim nations to agree, then maybe the message about the sanctity of free speech in the West / Non Muslim world might have been learnt. We will never know, as the western politicians need for oil prevented this sort of 'Victorian diplomacy', and we are paying a heavy price now. Thanks for the comment.
