China's Illegal Imperial Territorial Claims ... Top Nation Style |
This doesn't just reflect in their ignoring of international legal rulings over their land grab in the South China seas, but in the smaller petty things that a big nation should be able to laugh off.
Whether this a actually a property of becoming the number one nation, or just peculiar to the oriental mindset, I am not sure. However the US was also a little prickly as Donald J Trump's responses to every little criticism reflects, when it too took up the mantle of #1 Top Dog from the British Empire in the 1940's.
This new Chinese nature reflects in a number of ways. Anger at any perceived 'insult' to the country, the flag, or suggestion that they are bending all the World Trade Organisation rules, to even the gentlest of ribbing by foreigners or internal citizens. This is often a sign of a lack of maturity and insecurity.
Qing Dynasty ~ Lohan Sitting Figure |
An example of this came up recently when historic Chinese cultural artefacts have appeared as on-line memes on various social platforms ~ especially Weibo. The images by the way, are both funny and interesting. We don't see enough of China's vast treasures in the West and they prone to insularity as this post illustrates ~ I have used the English translations of the memes.
Neolithic Era Man's Head |
The pictures posted by Sina Breaking News of many of these artefacts with meme text overlaid have caused offence and laughter in China in an unequal measure. As usual under the repressive censorship that the Chinese state thinks is the best control method, those who complain against the memes, have nothing to fear except silent ridicule, whilst those who laugh it off, can find themselves attracting the unwanted attention of the governments internet goons.
Ethnic Han Dancers Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 AD) |
So some people complained that the images were 'insulting', and "an insult to [Chinese] culture". Whilst another top-rated comment asked "Is spoofing cultural relics illegal?" .... personally I would refer them to the history of nations section of 'The Boomers Bible' by R.F. Laird, in which it shows how the pointy stick of #1 nation comes around, and goes around ..... so you have to take your turn with good grace and a smile, cos it may be a long time before your turn comes around again, as Britain is discovering.
So lighten up you Chinese .... you will only be top dog nation for an allotted time, so don't get pissy over every little thing.
The French and Spanish were both a bit pissy when they were too dogs. Maybe it's a post number one thing, to be able to laugh at one's self. Mind you, neither of them laughs at themselves much now, so maybe not.
ReplyDeleteFair point. Victorian Brits weren't renowned for laughing at themselves either. Thanks for the comment.
