Fat Matters

Fizzy drinks are the biggest cause of the world wide obesity epidemic. This was confirmed when 250,000 thousand peoples records were examined, in a study of a number of reports about obesity, and its drivers.

Both children and adults were included in the examination of diet and health records, from twenty eight, out of the thirty studies having been undertaken in past 3 years, with all confirming the pivotal role of fizzy carbonated sugar drinks in the world wide obesity crisis.

Of course not all the problems can be put down to carbonated drinks. We inflict some of the problems on ourselves .... for example 'Man v Food' restaurant challenges don't help.

These large meal challenges are not just restricted to the USA. In Stroud, Gloucestershire, England the Chicken Peri-Peri takeaway in Gloucester Road was offering £100 ($125) to anyone who could complete their 4 foot chicken Peri Peri wrap.

The super size meal includes a whopping 5kg of chicken, six different sauces, and 17 wraps plus chips (fries) ..... as far as I know, no one has completed this challenge, but I could stand to be corrected.

However not all is lost ..... now I admit that I am not a slow eater, which is maybe why a finding by the American Heart Foundation is of some interest. It appears that slow eaters are not only more likely to be fitter and slimmer (probably because their slow eating allows the stomach to signal 'full' to the brain before they finish the whole plate), but also are significantly less likely to suffer from obesity, heart disease, and strokes.

But even slow eating can't help if your fat in childhood ..... a report from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health states that children who are obese at age 11 are being "condemned to an early death", and called for sweeping measures to reduce Britain's junk food consumption, as senior doctors told the press that millions of families were stuck in a "terrible destructive cycle".

Incidentally the average time it takes to lose the extra pounds in weight put on over Christmas is reckoned to be around 6 months, according to a team at Tampere University Finland. That's if you ever lose them .... most don't, or lose them, only to put those extra pounds back on within the year.

The affects of this crisis are being felt throughout the health services, with it being reported that many of Britain's fat patients can no longer have their blood pressure taken by the traditional straps round the upper arm, because they now routinely have a circumference of greater than 32cm (13inches). Doctors have had to devise a test for the wrists. It should be pointed out, that this is a fat 32cm, not muscular upper arms.

But what about alcohol I hear you ask. Well a study commissioned by Skinny Brands, which has shown that during their lifetime, the average Brit will consume an additional 3.5 million calories from alcohol alone.

However there are some cultures where these issues are not the crisis they are elsewhere ..... a theme park in northern China offered free entry tickets for a week to women, if they weighed over nine and a half stone (61.8kg) .... Women had to sit on a large weighing scale if they wanted free entry to the park

.... the Tang Dynasty-themed park had chosen 61.8kg (9.7 Stone), as this was the approximate weight of Yang Guifei, an eighth century imperial consort, and one of China's "four great beauties", and being "slightly overweight" was a beauty standard during that dynasty (618-907 AD) .....

..... It should be said that at that weight, most western women would have free rides forever.
