Bombs Awayday

School sports days can be a bit boring ....

Home Guard Grenade Instructions

..... but not in the North University of China (Taiyun, Northern shanxi province), where organisers livened up events by including Hand Grenade throwing (sorry no images).

Yes in May 2017 it decided that students could enter an event to throw weighted replicas of the Type 23 grenade. Its a grenade based upon the wood handled WWII German Stielhand-grenade.

Competitive Grenade Throwing Is Not A New Sport ....

NUC is the site of the Taihang Industrial School. Founded by China's Eighth Route Army in 1941, the school was instrumental in developing weaponry and training Peoples Liberation Army personnel.

'Dads Army' (The British Home Guard) - Grenade Training 1940 (Note: No Grenades - Just Tins)

Apparently in 1918, a publication Hand-Grenade Throwing as a College Sport, written by Lewis Omer was published by Spalding press of New York & Chicago. The British Library's catalogue, is the only repository to list this pamphlets publication. Spalding & Bros were an actual manufacturer of US sporting equipment. It was just nine printed pages and no copies exist.

Even the Library of Congress haven’t got the booklet listed, and apparently it shows up in no other repository.

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.

Final decision on all comments is held by the blog author and is final.
