Too Hot To Handle

In 2016, Wayne Algenio a 34 year old who may need his head testing, decided to eat the worlds hottest chilli pepper, with the intention of breaking the world record for number/weight eaten ...

The Carolina Reaper Even Looks Evil .....

.... the chilli, which is nicknamed the Carolina Reaper, is so strong that it has its own Wikipedia page.

Admittedly the attempt was at a local US chilli eating contest (NYC Hot Sauce Expo in Brooklyn), but even so, its not the the brightest thing in the world to do. There are allegedly hotter chilli's, but none is confirmed with a Scoville scale higher than the Carolina Reaper (which measure over 1.5 million on that heat unit scale).

Red Hot Chillies .... Not To Be Toyed With.

He ate 22 of these peppers weighing  119 grams (size of the chilli's varies so the weight is the record), and afterward said .....

"You eat as many as you can in a minute, and then after that minute is over, you have to stand there for another minute without vomiting or drinking any liquids," Algenio said. "After I stopped, I could feel the burn in my throat. It's an excruciating pain."

As you might expect, there were some predictable later side effects. A little while after the record setting performance, the man was hospitalised with intense neck pains, and 'thunder clap' headaches (each lasting a few seconds'). The chilli pepper had induced a condition know as cerebral vaso-constriction syndrome (narrowing of the brain arteries).

Fortunately for him, its side effects are reversible, and the condition cleared up after about a week. You have to wonder if the winning prize was worth that amount of pain?
