No Accounting for Tastes

The good people of Preston, Lancashire UK, voted for a local Nandos as their top 'restaurant,' and a Wetherspoon's pub (the Twelve Tellers), as their top public house in a poll.

They could do better than that ....

Many years ago I once worked for 6 months in an office above the bus station in Preston on a contract. The Black Horse a Robinson's pub with an original Victorian bar interior, I recall with some fondness for a start, and just outside Preston back then, there was the rather upmarket Tickled Trout Restaurant/hotel (although that seems to have become part of a hotel chain now), and so I can only assume that the poll was run with customers of Nandos or Wetherspoons.

Minority Meals

According to a survey undertaken by marketing firm Mintel, around a third of the adult British population eat alone, even when living with partners or families. This figure is higher than the majority of European countries, but it seems that Poland has a higher figure at forty per cent of adults doing the same.

Was Seen As A Social Stigma.....

However its not isolation or loneliness, but rather our increasing love of digital devices, and our unwillingness to be interrupted whilst using them, that is the driver for this activity. This conclusion fits in well with a study that shows that social media usage is killing more relationships than ever before.

Yes, according to Oldstyle-dating.com, the typical lifetime of a romantic relationship has fallen to just 17 months, with the main cause for this being suspicion, resentment and rows fuelled by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter accounts.

Social Media Spying Is Endemic Inside Relationships
Social Media Spying Is Endemic Inside Relationships ......

Their poll found that people regularly looked at their partners digital devices and trawled their accounts to check for cheating. Relate said that this causes more breakups than any other reason (a sign of the times I guess), with 6 in 10 of those questioned saying that social media puts additional pressure on modern relationships.

Oldstyle-dating.com added that
  • 1 in 7 couples added that their last relationship breakdown over their partners on line flirting.
  • Others said that images posted on others accounts was the cause of issues.
  • 1 in 10 said that their partner trawling their phone was the reason.
  • 1 in 10 said that they had discovered that their partner had retained a dating profile and account.
