Smiling Security

In India, the airport security have been asked to look sterner ....

Smiling Security - Reassuring Or Worrying?
Smiling Security - Reassuring Or Worrying?

..... because their habit of smiling and joking could be perceived by foreign travellers as lax security.

They were asked to move from a "broad smile system" to a "sufficient smile system", the Indian Express says. This came after officials are said to believe that excessive friendliness by their staff  puts Indian airports at risk of terrorist attacks ... possibly becasue terrorists would perceive them as soft targets, compared with airports elsewhere, where staff look more business like and stern.

Now I don't know about you, but actually someone looking as though they are not worried about attack is something I actually find a damn site more reassuring, than a pensive and worried looking security team.

Still I guess its a case of one mans perceptions against another's ..... do you want confident and carefree looking security staff, or would that look like lackadaisical clowns, who haven't looked for a terrorist in the past decade to you? Alternatively do the ruthless, stony faced hard-men patrolling give you comfort and joy, or put you into a state of panic and unease?

As proof that this really is a case of one mans perceptions against anther's, in Nepal, the capitals police have been trained to be more friendly. This after accusations of brutality and sternness when dealing with the populace. They are to act more humble and to smile more in a campaign that has been called "service with a smile".

Police in the sub continent are often asked to amend their behaviours, from how to deal with rape complaints, to their practice of getting a quick 'confession' for almost every high profile crime .... but oddly the Karnataka State Reserve Police told its officers to lose weight, or face suspension from service. While a few years ago, the police in Madhya Pradesh state were paid to grow moustaches, mainly because their bosses believed it made them command more respect ..... Freddy Mercury anyone?
