The Tale Of The Lonesome Pine

In 1882 or sometime shortly after that ....

This Old Lonesome Pine Could Tell A Story ...... A Cowboys Last Stand?
This Old Lonesome Pine Could Tell A Story ...... A Cowboys Last Stand?

...... a cowboy, miner or trapper in the Great Basin Desert in the eastern part of Nevada, left his expensive Winchester rifle leaning against a 5,000-year-old, lonesome pine tree in a mountain forest ....

..... he never came back to collect it. It was discovered 182 years later, still resting against the pine tree.

Nevada In the 1880's Was An Underpopulated Place

Now what a story start ... only its not a story, its true. Obviously we have to assume that he would have collected the rifle if he had been able to do so, and that something happened to prevent this.

However unless they find a body nearby, then we will never know ... Maybe a wild animal or wild native attacked this now unarmed man ... perhaps he fell and injured himself, or was on his last legs due to water shortage ... we will never know, but its fun to speculate .... perhaps he was taken by aliens (joking) ... or Paiute Indians (just possible - they resented the miners and settlers), or maybe a bear or cougar,

He may even have fallen down one of the miners holes that litter the hills and mountains ..... its a mystery that may never be solved.

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
