When Animals Strike Back

Apparently the wild cattle of the New Forest in England number around 3,000 ....

.... and up until now they have been perfectly OK wandering freely with their horns uncut, causing few problems.

However as more 'dog walkers' use the forest area, there have been more attacks by the cattle. Now we all know that dog owners in the UK are prone to ignoring rules about cleaning up after their dogs mess the streets, let alone leashing their pets. So even in normal farm fields with sheep and cattle, some selfish owners let their dogs worry the farm animals.

So its not hard to guess that in a 'forest', these dogs will be even less likely to be under any controls by their owners. Cattle will defend themselves, and be especially aggressive if they have calves.

However in the dog mad UK, pressure has been put on the free-roaming cattle owners association, the New Forest Commoners Defence Association, who have ruled that their cattle will have to have their horns removed. Animal rights group PETA (who I rarely have a good word for), have declared this to be cruel (which its not), and have called for a 'peaceful solution' ...

.... In this case I agree that the its the dog owners who need to be properly schooled, but as they tend to be a group which PETA gets support from, it leaves them on the horns of a dilemma.

Hunter Turns Hunted

The remains of a man who was poaching in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, when he was attacked and killed by lions, have been found. A loaded hunting rifle and ammunition were found next to the body. I say remains, actually they ate most of his body, and just left his head and some bone parts. He remains unidentified even when he came out of the lions backsides.

Lion bones and other body parts are increasingly sought-after in Africa and South East Asia (especially China), where they are sometimes used as a substitute for Tiger bones in what passes as 'traditional medicine' aka 'magic', as wild tigers have been poached to near extinction in South East Asia.

Tough Justice

Three poachers, who broke into the Sibuya game reserve, near Kenton-On-Sea in South Africa, were only found by what a pride of lions left of them, namely one head, and few body parts. The gang were hunting for Rhinos, and nine Rhinos had already been killed in the reserve for their horns (some Asian men think it gives them hard on's - obviously not heard of Viagra), in the area in 2018.

Dead Eye Dog

Matt Branch, an ex Louisiana State University American footballer and avid hunter in Mississippi lost his left leg, when his Labrador retriever, Tito, stepped on his shotgun, pulling the trigger.

Still Going To Hunt ... Just Not As Fast.
Still Going To Hunt ... Just Not As Fast.

Mr Branch's leg was amputated after nine operations failed to save the limb. Mr Branch said that the loss of his leg wouldn't stop him hunting, and that he hadn't shot the dog ..... No, but the dog sure shot him.

Hairy Saboteur

Firstly, again my lack of knowledge on the creatures of Europe is a little worrying. Like the hamsters of Hungary

Raccoons Are Very Agile And Can Get Anywhere
Raccoons Are Very Agile And Can Get Anywhere .....

.... I was not aware that raccoons lived in Germany, as well as the USA. Apparently the first raccoons were brought to Germany in around 1920 to be bred in captivity for their pelts, now after some escaped, these clever creatures number over a million, and are a pest.

Anyway's, that aside, on the 28th of July 2017 there was an explosion at the power station in the Berlin suburb of Sie-mensstadt. The bang was so loud it was heard four miles away, and there was a large droning noise for around 35 minutes.

Investigations found that the 110,000-volt transformer had been short circuited by a raccoon getting into the plant and chewing through power cables, and the noise was the turbine grinding slowly to a halt ..... as in all these tails (joke), the denouement is that the raccoon was completely unharmed, and wandered off when the investigators turned up.

* Forest in medieval time didn't mean densely wooded area but actually referred to a protected area that was reserved, in the this case for Royal hunting.
