As the pubs finally become mask and distancing free again .... good news we hope ...
The British Fail A Number Of Health Markers ... And Football |
.... the Brits may well revert back to their former drinking habits.
Which is not perhaps such good news. Because in 2019, just before the corona pandemic struck the world, and good ol' Blighty, there had been reports that when it comes to alcohol consumption, Britain has something of an over drinking problem.
The report, from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), indicated that on average for the population we drank the equivalent of 108 bottles of wine, or 427 pints of lager per annum.
This compared unfavourably with an average alcohol intake of 99 bottles, or 392 pints of lager across the 36 countries where the intake was measured. When converted to pure unadulterated alcohol values, the British drinks 9.7 litres annually, compared to a world average of 8.9 litres.
We are also losing the battle of the bulge, as 64 per cent of British adults are overweight or obese, and again, against the 36 nation comparison, average of 56 per cent of adults being classed as overweight or obese. However in a chink of good news, we are better than average for smoking tobacco ... 17.2 per cent of the population are smokers, against 18 per cent in the comparison group.
But all in all, we were ranked a poor 17th in a wider grouping of 44 nations for alcohol consumption, and 25th worst for smoking. When these figures were examined by age groups, it was found that in Britain, those born in the 1950s, 60s and 70s who were the worst for drinking ....
But alcohol consumption levels have been falling for several decades, so god knows what the figures would have been if the same survey had been performed 30 years ago ... perhaps its for the best that it wasn't.
