War Avoided

With the world in the delicate state that it is at the moment ...

.... the last thing we would have needed was another war in central Europe.

But that's what could have happened (and certainly would have occurred pre 1945), when Poland accidentally 'invaded' the Czech Republic in late May 2020. Thankfully Russia wasn't involved, and so war didn't break out.

The 'invasion' happened when Polish soldiers mistakenly crossed in to Czech territory in north-eastern Moravia, effectively annexing a corner of its territory, while attempting to guard the country against Covid-19 lockdown violations, with people crossing into or leaving Poland against the rules.

They spent quite a while in the Czech Republic, happily turning away bemused Czech citizens who were attempting to visit a church that was now in Poland. However they realised their mistake after the local Czech police force was contacted, and the Polish troops were ordered to leave. They then withdrew back in to Poland, with red faces. The Czech foreign ministry later said that Poland had "unofficially assured us that this incident was merely a misunderstanding with no hostile intention" .... they added that they were still waiting for a formal explanation or apology.

I suspect that map reading or the Google Maps App will be on the training program for Polish soldiers in the future!

Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
