They say that the right to vote (also known as Suffrage) in a democracy is a precious thing ....
Many Say That The Right To Vote Is The Essence Of Democracy |
..... that we should all fight to preserve this right in a world where democracy is a fragile thing.
This is particularly true in Asia, where recently the weak democracy of Afghanistan has just reverted back to its usual state of theocracy. But even so, some people maybe take their vote more seriously than the rest of us .... after all we have all voted, and then wished that we had voted for the other party ... c'est la vie as we usually say.
Pawan Kumar Takes Voting Very Seriously ..... |
But not Indian voter Pawan Kumar, a Dalit (formerly untouchable) in the Hindu Caste system, from Bulandshahr in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. He takes his vote vary seriously, as indeed do many others of the 900 million eligible voters in India, in what is the biggest national democratic election the world has ever seen.
In 2019 he wanted to vote for the Bahujan Samaj Party in the second round of the elections, so when by accident he voted for the ruling Hindu Nationalist party BJP in error, after getting the voting form symbols (All parties have logo's because many are still illiterate in India), mixed up, he was very, very upset with himself.
"I wanted to vote for the elephant, but I voted for the flower by mistake"
So looking at the offending digit that was still marked with the anti-fraud purple voting ink, he decided to take al leaf from Matthew 5:29 (if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out,and cast it from thee), and cut off the end of the voting finger.
... "so I chopped my finger for the mistake."
Now that is the action of a man, for whom the right to vote in a democracy is not something to be taken lightly.
