Religion Of Lust

Herry Wirawan was a 30 year old a Islamic religious teacher ....

..... when he opened his Islamic boarding school for boys and girls aged 11-16, in Bandung city in West Java, Indonesia, in 2016.

He immediately started grooming and raping the girls (at least thirteen girls, and impregnated eight of them. They had given birth to nine children by the time he was caught). The abuse only came out only in May 2021, when the parents of one of the victims discovered their child was pregnant.

He had got away with this abuse, by confiscating mobile phones, and home visits were only allowed once a year for the girls, who all came from poor regions. As is not uncommon in that region of the world, there are claimed to be high rates of sexual violence and abuse of women in Indonesia, including shocking gang rapes. But in the 'conservative' (aka socially backward) predominantly Muslim country, this is denied by many male leaders.

There has been a sexual violence eradication bill stuck in the national legislature for years, stalled by those same male conservative lawmakers, who with the usual Muslim religious leaders excuse and claims that by making sexual harassment, rape, marital rape and other forms of sexual violence criminal offences, it would somehow promote sexual promiscuity.

In February 2022 the now 36-year-old was sentenced to life in jail (and not death or chemical castration, as demanded by the parents and the prosecution). To be fair 'Life' in an Indonesian prison would be worse than death for most of us ... The Indonesian government has said it will pay up to 85 million Indonesian rupiahs ($5,945; £4,394), in compensation to each of Wirawan's victims.

After trying to ignore many of the sexual assaults in the country, these tiny compensation amounts may seem like little apology but many sexual violence activists hope that this could finally be Indonesia's moment to take action about sexual violence against women nationwide.

The Indonesian government may finally be shamed into action .... but probably not.
