He gets away with his crimes because our revolving door system allows him to commit offence after offence and be back on the streets (if he ever got locked up), to commit another offence all too often.
His latest con was to manage
to commit two offences at once. Firstly he convinced the staff at the
five star Grand Hotel in York, that he was the father of an impending
wedding party and that he was staying there under the pre-booked event.
in two days he ran up an alcohol bill of £1,770. When he was exposed after the real father got the bill, staff found a “scene of devastation” in the conman’s room. There "were bottles of alcohol all over the place; many of them had been spilt.”
He was arrested and it emerged that he already had 32 previous fraud convictions (he's aged just 42),
but nonetheless he was bailed, and with a few days on his hands he
headed down to London.
There he went to the Claridges Hotel, and enacted another con trick, racking up another £4,683 bill before being arrested. In April 2019 he was sentenced to one year for the Claridges con, and two years for the York sting. Sentences to be served consecutively (for a change) ..... but he will be out in 18 months regardless, and will no doubt rack up fraud offence number 35 within weeks.
“He is a practised and persistent fraudster," as one barrister described him, and his last defence attorney admitted that "he was a long-term alcoholic".
