He claimed to have enjoyed a 'happy and fulfilling marriage' .... but then he left her.
They then got divorced. Nothing too unusual in this, except that Mr Matheson was a pioneer of 'conversion therapy', which was supposed to turn homosexual men straight. He was a promoter of the idea that being gay is something that should, and can, be “cured”.
It is an idea that has been denounced by the American Medical
Association, the American Psychological Association and a host of other
major, accredited health organisations
He now states that during his marriage he "experienced attractions to men" .... he said he had a 'non-negotiable need' to be in a relationship with a man. He has blamed his previous views on the "shame-based, homophobic-based system" of the Mormon church in which he was raised.
He didn't exactly advertise his conversion on the road to Damascus .... rather he was outed by LGBT charity 'Truth Wins Out,' which reported on a leaked private conversation between Matheson and “conversion therapy” advocate Rich Wyler, and then pointed out how ineffective the conversion therapy was if it didn't even 'cure' him.
The practise of conversion therapies is legal in US, but banned in 15 states from being carried out on minors. Physician heal thy self comes to mind ....
