A patrol officer was approaching the car and was able to observe the bizarre manoeuvre unfold before his eyes.
The
man had been initially stopped for speeding at 52mph (84km/h) in a
30mph zone, but it was fairly obvious to the arresting officer that he
was also highly intoxicated, the Springfield Police Department wrote in a
Facebook post.

"The driver attempted to switch places with his dog who was in the
passenger seat, as the SPD officer approached and watched the entire
process,” the police Facebook post said. “The male party then exited the passenger side
of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving.”
He attempted to run away from the police officer when he was asked about his alcohol consumption. He was quickly apprehended within 20 yards of the car and charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and speeding.
He was taken to the local hospital before being discharged and sent to the Baca County Jail. The dog, whom police did not name either, was given to the driver's acquaintance to take care of while his owner serves his time in jail.
"The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning," the police department joked.
One Facebook commenter said “He was obviously too drunk to use a GPS so he got a guide dog.”
