Pigs Called Out

A sheriffs deputy in Yavapai County, Arizona will face some odd calls ..... from gunshots, to car thefts, and everything in between .....

'Gregory' the Peccary - Cheeto Lover

.... and this will include animals stuck inside a vehicle.

In this case, the deputy arrived on scene to find a Peccary (known locally as a Javelina) stuck inside a Subaru station wagon. It had entered via the rear hatch which had been left open overnight, and was eating a bag of Cheetos. Only a distant relative of the wild pig, they are fairly common in Arizona. With snouts, hooves and coarse fur, and weighing between 40lb (18kg) and 60lb (27kg), they stand at roughly 19 inches (48cm) tall .... they travel at night often in family herds, with poor eyesight but a good sense of smell, and are muscular. So not to be taken lightly.

The deputy attempted to shoo the animal out of the SUV, but in the process the animals movement closed the hatch, causing the creature to panic. It ran about trying to find an exit, but only succeeded in knocking the gears out of park and into neutral. This caused the vehicle to start rolling down the driveway, with 'Gregory' the Peccary still inside.

The vehicle  then rolled down the street, fortunately avoiding other vehicles, both the  parked or the travelling until it crashed in to some trees. The sheriffs deputy then caught up with the vehicle and managed to let the freaked out Peccary from the SUV via the hatch .... it was apparently unharmed and ran off. However, that's more than can be said for the Subaru station wagon, which as well as some panel scrapes, had the interior shredded by the peccary, which tore up part of the dashboard and part of the passenger door.

Arizona wildlife officials urge residents to keep their distance from 'javelinas' and to abstain from feeding them ... and not to leave food in open untended vehicles. The sheriffs office issued a statement saying "Can you blame him, who doesn't like a midnight Cheeto snack?"
