The Age Of Conquest and Empires Is Back

In the old days of empire, stealing, appropriating and incorporating other countries territories ....

The Assyrians Were Early Empire Builders And Set A Three Thousand Year Trend
The Assyrians Were Early Empire Builders
And Set A Three Thousand Year Trend.

.....  was a common and accepted political and military practise.

This wasn't just a European practice (just as slavery wasn't just Blacks shipped to the America's in the 19th century, but practised in all Muslim countries as well as Thailand, China and Japan etc at the same time), as white leftie apologist historians always suggest, but rather was a practice that had gone on since the Assyrians right up until the 1930's with Hitler taking Austria and Japan seizing Manchuria to add to its Korean land seizure in the previous century.

No one said too much about it at the end of the 19th century, and certainly didn't militarily stop it in the early 20th century, until Hitler seized Czechoslovakia and invaded Poland. However since the end of World War II and the formation of the United Nations in 1945 it was the civilised consensus that borders and states be recognised and respected.

So for example Israel's seizure of lands in 1948, 1967 and 1973 were only partially recognised, and some of the 1967 and 1973 land gains were handed back. The West fought wars to defend South Korea in and the US supported jihadists to fight Russia in Afghanistan (wrongly in my opinion, but that's another story), and indeed have spent Billions of Dollars, Pounds and Euro's to help the Ukraine resist Russia's current attempt to conquer it.

But under Donald Trump, the USA has now taken to routinely threatening to incorporate foreign lands into the USA, by force if necessary, as well as trying to force regime change in other nations across the globe.  Canada, and increasingly threateningly, the Danish territory of Greenland, have both been subject to Trump's wish to own all Western hemisphere lands North of the Mexican border.

South of the Mexican border regime change by coercion, or military force, have been threatened in Venezuela (where blockades and military force have already been exerted), but also in Colombia and Cuba, as well as the possibility of seizing the Panama canal. This is ignoring Iran, where Trump's concerns more closely align with other western countries (as well as close regional ally Isreal), and again force threatened.

If I was a Victorian politician such as Gladstone or Disraeli, I would see all this as just worthy Imperialism and Empire building and not unusual (apart from the weakness of the European powers of Britain, France and Germany). The scramble for colonies back in the late Victorian era is not much different from what's going on today .... Russia wants the Ukraine, China wants Taiwan and the South China Seas, the USA  wants Greenland, and a compliant South America in its Western Hemisphere hegemony.

The New Munroe Doctrine
The Don-Roe Doctrine

All this aggression behaviour ignoring UN charter rules, makes the USA look more like Russia and China, rather than leaders of the free and democratic world. When I suggested that Trump would leave a very different world behind when he left office (if he left office), I didn't envisage the collapse of the world political and trade order and possibly NATO, with the USA going rogue to put its interests above everyone and everything, but that looks very much what's going to happen.

European nations need to wake up and smell the coffee. Pacifism and cooperation in international relations, are now regarded as weakness in the new world that's being created (as evidenced by Trump and Vance's open contempt for Europe). Europe needs to remilitarise, and create economies that can support those forces without the USA (including intelligence capabilities such as satellites and over the horizon views etc), because our enemies may not always come from the East. Certainly the USA under Trump and Vance would very likely not support us militarily despite NATO membership rules, and may even (by the seizure of Greenland for example) be in conflict with us.

The age of conquest and empires is apparently back with a vengeance .... perhaps we gave up our empires far to easily 60 to 80 years ago, because the new empire builders are on the march as we enter the second quarter if the 21st century, and apparently respect no world order rules .... just military might.

  1. The world is edging towards another world war or at least a major powers confrontation. Its hard to see it ending well.

    2. Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, told CNN: “We’re a superpower, and … we’re going to conduct ourselves as a superpower.”

“We live … in the real world … that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power. These are the iron laws of the world that have existed since the beginning of time.”

The predators prey on the weak and Europe is currently weak after letting the US cover its defence. But I suspect that by the time Trump's term ends Europe will not be so weak, and the US will have lost a lot of respect, friends and allies in Europe and world wide.

    3. Its unnerving to see the US transition into threat to allies and a coloniser state in the term of just 12 months. If Vance wins the next term the damage will be irreparable for the free world.

I dont think anyone could have guessed that the US constitution, justice system and sense of morality were so weak. Trump has simply swept all precedent aside and simply removed most, if not all the balances that were supposed to keep power in three hands, not one.

The Republicans seem to be mesmerised into blindly accepting all his actions not matter how outlandish. They seem to forget that one day a Democrat will hold office with all these new precedents and be able to do much the same things that they are leting Trump do.

    4. I, like the rest of the free world are aghast at what's going on. The Supreme Court seem uninterested in blocking any of Trumps domestic policies (a result of the court being packed with conservatives), and Congress seems unwilling to stop Trumps attacks on friends and allies. He's systematically dismantling alliances, international treaties and NATO, while heading apparently for isolationism, with only US self interest (as he perceives it), the motivation for US (armed) interventions in the world.

Like you suggest, the whole US system of government seems to have been totally built on a lie, which was that it was balanced by three forces to stop Presidents from acting as Trump is doing right now. When push came to shove, as long as the Supreme Court is loaded with sympathetic judges, a President can expand his powers, both domestically and internationally, while a supine Congress looks on.

The world is being reset before our very eyes, and not for the better. Thanks for the comments both of you.
