The Scream was painted by Edvard Munch in 1892. There are four versions of the picture, which is Munch's most famous painting but they all share the same psychedelic sky.
Up until now most people thought that this was in the style of Vincent van Gogh's and other post impressionist artists skies, possibly because of the volcanic effects on European weather after the eruption of Krakatoa 1883 produced spectacular red and pink sunsets throughout the world for many months.
However now a bunch of Norwegian scientists say that in fact Mr Munch probably based it on a rare phenomena known as 'Mother of Pearl Clouds'. These are also termed Polar Stratospheric (Type II) Clouds; (Nacreous Clouds), and are a better match for the wavy shapes he painted.
I can see the match, and thought it was interesting enough to post upon. After all who hasn't spent time sky watching and looking at clouds? Its possibly one of the few things all cultures on this increasingly divided world share ... oh and its called Nephelococcygia when you spot shapes.

It's an interesting theory but it doesn't make me like the painting any better which ressembles a naive attempt with a broken paint brush and the left over paint from a recycling centre. That artists want to express themselves in this way is one thing, I don't understand why they get so much attention.

DeleteYou could say that. An impressionistic car would be ugly, uncomfortable and would break down twice on every trip. Why this is acceptable hung on a wall, I don't know. Being uncomfortable on a trip to work is one thing but being made to feel uncomfortable on your day off in an art gallery is not my idea of a good time.
