The ability of the social media trolls to hunt down and find offence at the most innocent of things is one of the worst aspects of this PC curse ....
'H&M', the Swedish clothes giant, got into trouble because the little black boy modelled the sweat shirt with the words 'Coolest Monkey in the jungle'.
As you might expect, this was too much for Labour Party MP's, and race warrior MP Kate Osamor who tweeted "I was totally shocked, dismayed to say the very least to find this online imagine (sic). @hm do you think this imagery is an appropriate representation of a young black boy?" .... she was joined by others of the same mindset, some of whom called it the product of a 'neocolonial thinking' and called for a boycott.
So now in our colour blind society, a white child can be called a cheeky monkey but not a black one??? By the way, the mother of the child model has said that she did not find it offensive. She said the hoodie was "one of hundreds of outfits my son has modelled", and urged people to "stop crying wolf all the time".
But they no longer listen to any logic before they launch into their complaints ..... and as usual this involves violence, and or looting. In this case in South Africa where protests were organised by the radical Economic Freedom Fighters party (EFF), a vehicle for radical black leader Julius Malema, who in the past has urged for Boers to be killed. His followers broke into and looted H&M stores in and around Johannesburg. South African police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the mobs.
Malema defended the rampage, saying: "We make no apology about what the fighters did today. We are not going to allow anyone to use the colour of our skin to humiliate us, to exclude us."
The mother of the little boy responded to these mobs store invasions, by tweeting that "apartheid and racism [have] corrupted some so much that this is thought to be reasonable in response to a hoodie with the word "monkey" on it". ...
.... of course she is right, but these race 'warriors' just race to be the first to tweet or use violence without checking facts. They imagine offence where none was intended or given and don't give a monkeys what the child's mother actually thinks .

Cant argue with that opinion. Social media allows these planks a voice they would never otherwise have. Thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteIt's a credit to H&M that they didn't spot the "faux pas", and anyone else who had to have it pointed out to them! Well done too the mother of the model who didn't jump on the bandwagon of indignation. The war will be won when people stop being offended for others like this.

I caught Idiocracy just last night, or was it the night before? It was quite watchable. I thought that the protagonist sounded a bit like Owen Wilson and indeed, it's his brother!

Indeed it was something of a Wilson-fest. However it was an enjoyable movie and the basic premise is wickedly plausible, as these PC trolls confirm everyday.
DeleteOn the Instagram/Tweets/Facebook followers aspect of this - In July last year it was disclosed that some enterprising soul in Russia has set up vending machines where for the princely sum of about 70p, you can buy 100 Instagram 'likes' .... this has caused some outrage amongst Instagram users. But the fact that the machines are getting a trade just shows just how desperate to 'appear popular' on social media some people are ...... I wonder where you buy blog visitors?
