As you can see from this image from the web, Death Row inmates represent certain races which varies slightly per state, but generally represent a similar pattern.
Ethnicity of US Prisoners on Death Row*
- White: 1,211 (40.03%)
- Black: 902 (29.83%)
- Latino/Latina: 911 (30.11%)
- Asian: 4 (0.02%)
- Native American: 1 (0.01%)
- Unknown: 0 (0%)

Comparatively, the ethnicity of the U.S. general population is:
- 66.9% ~ non-Hispanic white,
- 9% ~ Black,
- 16.3% ~ Hispanic or Latino,
- 4.7% ~ Oriental/Asian,
- 0.9% ~ Native American, and
- 2.1% ~ Mixed or other.
- Comparatively violent black Americans are, or
- How unfair the US justice system is (depending on your point of view).

It certainly is interesting to look at the figures, it's the only way to make some sense of the situation.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing which came to my mind concerning the Asian statistic is that they are generally smaller and it makes sense that they wouldn't engage in a confrontation which they are likely to lose. This raises the question of whether black people are generally bigger than whites?
From watching documentaries on serial killers I know that women tend not to engage, and when they do, they choose poison over violence presumably, at least in part, because of their smaller stature.
Size is possibly a factor in choosing a victim, but I don't think its a factor in the criminality of groups. As discussed in a number of posts over the years there is a general propensity for more crime in some ethnic groups living as minorities.

As for women, I was under the impression that 'poisoning' was a rather Victorian trait, whereas knives or scissors in the night were more the trend these days.
