No Pecking Order
The council of Bristol in England have put up thousands of plastic spike to stop birds (particularly pigeons) from roosting in the trees in the Clifton area of the city. Its believed that the spikes and other measures (including fake hawks), are there solely to protect residents cars from being fouled.
Having had my car spotted (well splattered might be a more accurate description), by Sea Gulls, I have some sympathy with the car owners.
Save The Seas
The UK has banned the use of rinse off micro-beads in face scrubs, and shower gels. The minute particles get into the food chain via fish and are potentially harmful to any creature which ingests them.

A shopping mall in Maidstone Kent removed a reindeer head from the wall in its Santa's Grotto after a 6 year old child thought Santa had killed Rudolph.

For decades we have been taught that the Black Death Plague was spread to Europe in a series of outbreaks in 14th-19th Century Europe, on the fleas of rats. Well a recent study by researchers in the universities of Oslo and Ferrara, has found the rats and their fleas innocent. In fact it was our own fleas and body lice who were the carriers of the disease.
The Black Death claimed an estimated 25 million lives, more than a third of Europe's population, between 1347 and 1351 alone. However based on contemporary data from nine cities in Europe a computer model simulated disease outbreaks in each of these cities, creating three models where the disease was spread by:
In seven out of the nine cities the "human parasite model" was a much better match for the pattern of the outbreak than rat fleas.
Blow-up Fun
A Zoo in Yulin City, southern China advertised its latest attractions as being penguins from the south Pole. This attracted a large number of visitors at 15 RMB (£1.60) but their anticipation turned to anger when the exhibits turned out to be blow up rubber toy penguins.
The rest of the Zoo was also rather underwhelming, as Guishan Zoo's only live animals were chickens, ducks, and tortoises .... they gave no refunds.
