Overkill Sentences?

The BBC report said that 'Ex-US Olympic gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was convicted as a serial child molester ...

and was sentenced to '40 to 175' years after the testimony from nearly 160 of his victims'.

The 54-year-old had already been sentenced to 60 years for possession of child pornography ..... So he was already not coming out of prison until he was at least 114, and now it will be sometime after his 154th birthday? Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said that 'I've signed your death warrant' ....

... now maybe Americans live a lot longer than us at an average of 76.10 years, but surely he was already going to die in prison before his 114th birthday? Still as we have seen with the Worboy's case in the UK, a long sentence for a sex attacker doesn't mean that they won't be let out early by delusional fools, so these sentences can preclude that happening.

Still, it all reminded me of when Charles II assumed the throne of England. In a fit of afters, he had nine of his fathers 'killers' hung, drawn and quartered; others were given life imprisonment or simply excluded from office for life.

Not content with that, the bodies of Oliver Cromwell, Henry Ireton and John Bradshaw were subjected to the indignity of posthumous decapitations (dug up, tried, and publicly beheaded) .... a small minded and pointless act. Bit like sentencing someone to over 100 years imprisonment in multiple life sentences.

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
