Jimmy Causey escaped from Leiber maximum security prison in Dorchester County, South Carolina, on 4th of July 2017, by having some fly wire cutters flown over the fence by drone.
He used a smuggled phone to co-ordinate his escape. He then cut through four defences, and left a dummy in his bed as a cover.
He has a lengthy criminal history, rivalled closely by his record of misbehaviour in prison, and he was considered extremely dangerous. A judge in 2004 gave him five life sentences for holding Columbia-area attorney Jack Swerling and his family hostage at gunpoint in their home in 2002.
He was caught 2 days after the jail break by Texas Rangers, in a motel in Austin Texas with $47,000, an ID card, and two guns. It was 1,225 miles from his prison, and he waived his right to an extradition hearing in Texas and was returned to South Carolina on July 12th.
Causey has also escaped from a maximum security South Carolina prison once before, in November 2005, when he and fellow prisoner Johnny Brewer, first used their Escape from Alcatraz trick to escape Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, by hiding in a trash bin, and then hitching a ride out of the prison in the back of a garbage truck.
They had concealed their absence by making fake heads out of toilet paper, which were placed in the inmates beds. The trick worked so well, it took prison staff nearly five hours to confirm their escape. They were recaptured two days later at a hotel in Jasper County.
Causey was given an additional 10 years in prison for that escape, which can't have meant much given his existing five life sentences. I suspect that we might yet hear more from the enterprising, if violent, Mr Causey.
