Biter Bitten

The Aceh region on the northern tip of Sumatra island in Indonesia, is run in a strict Islamic manner, and is the only region in Indonesia which enforces the full Sharia Islamic law.

This is due in the main, to the work of the Aceh Ulema Council (MPU), which advises the local government and legislature on drafting and implementing Sharia law in Aceh.

Aceh has the special autonomy right to introduce its own stricter Islamic laws, after being granted this privilege by the national government in 2001. Many of the supporters of Islamic criminal law in Aceh, defend its legality under that special autonomy, adding that it is also covered by the freedom of religion of the people of Aceh. But critics, object to the use of caning as a punishment, as well as the criminalization of consensual sex outside marriage, the consumption, production and distribution of alcohol, as well as gay sex and gambling.

Sharia law not only applies to all Muslims, but rather unusually (and controversially), non-Muslims as well in Aceh. So when Mukhlis bin Muhammad, who is both a local Mullah, and a member of the MPU, was found in September 2019, in a parked car, near a tourist beach, alone with a woman who was not his wife, and that she was also a married woman .... well that can only mean one thing in Aceh, an extra-marital affair.

MPU Mullah Whipped Under Sharia Law
Biter Bitten ....

As caning publicly on an open air platform, by a man (known as the 'algojo' -'executioner' ), wielding a rattan cane is the punishment for such offences, it was duly carried out .... the woman he had the alleged affair with, was separately caned 23 times, and Mukhlis bin Muhammad was flogged 28 times. Husaini Wahab, the deputy mayor of Aceh Besar district, where the punishments were administered said "This is God's law. Anyone must be flogged if proven guilty, even if he is a member of the MPU."

Mukhlis bin Muhammad is the first religious leader to be publicly caned in Aceh, since Sharia law came fully into force in 2005, and he will also be expelled from the MPU ... can't help thinking that a form of natural justice has been served in this case.
