Alco Pops

You know when its your lucky day as a pub landlord ......

Drunken Sailors - A Barman's Motto Is "Be Prepared"
A Barman's Motto Is "Be Prepared" When The Fleet Is In Town .....

...... when the US fleet is in town.

If you have any doubts about that, ask the manager of the Bar 38 in Portsmouth. In March 2015 the US aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt came off port with 5,000 thirsty sailors.

The Carrier is virtually 'dry' when at sea, so when they get to a port like Portsmouth, that has catered for sailors for several hundred years, well as 'Brody', one of its sailors told the press, "We go a little crazy".

Sales in pubs and restaurants in the town trebled that week, and in Bar 38 alone, the manager Joe Geary said that they cleared more than £69,000 ($86,000), in alcohol, in the five days the carrier was in town.

Oh What A Knight

Now we have all been blind drunk once or twice (or thrice) in our lives. But its hard to equate that with the two middle-aged gentlemen (58 and 61), who the German police in the city of Mainz came across early in 2018.

They had been called out by a passer-by, to free the two gentlemen. They were entangled with a mannequin figure dressed in a knights costume, and a large remote controlled car. When freed from their strange predicament, the two men were too drunk to be able to explain what had happened.

Caught In Trap

Neighbours in a West Yorkshire location heard a woman crying for help in the early hours of the morning, and called the police.

They rushed to the scene expecting a real emergency, only to find a drunken woman stuck in the cat flap of her house, after locking herself outside. The police later tweeted that it was the best call out of the night.

Wasted Flight

On the 6th of December 2018, Emma Langford, a single mother-of-two from the English Hampshire village of Old Basin, was on a flight to Cape Town South Africa to attend a rehabilitation centre, in order to get treatment for her alcohol addiction.

However, she apparently decided that she wouldn't try and kick her booze habit until she got to South Africa, and proceeded to have one last party and get drunk on the plane. When she was refused further drinks, she flew in to a drunken rage, attacking the British Airways staff on the Boeing 747 flight. Then she tipped over a tray of plates, and some glasses on to the floor which smashed, cutting another member of the air crew. A tussle then took place, and she was only restrained, when an off-duty police officer overpowered her.

She has two convictions for drinking and driving, and she was ordered to wear a SCRAM alcohol monitoring bracelet and had to be accompanied by a woman who observed her 24 hours a day, to ensure she did not drink any alcohol (due to an outstanding child custody battle), while she awaited sentencing on 06/03/2020 and faced up to two years in prison.

Oh, and she wasted £8,000 on two first class seats she bought (she didn't want anyone sitting next her I assume). Surprisingly, given the current lock down, she was able to go to court and was sentenced to a five-month jail sentence (suspended for 18 months), served concurrently with a 12-month sentence (suspended for 18 months), for the charge of being drunk on an aircraft. The judge also ordered Langford to pay £1,000 compensation to the three British Airways staff, and £1,000 in costs ... I suspect that the fines were small beer to her.

New Year - All Year Woe

Workers with hangovers from drink or drugs, cost British firms £1.4bn a year in lost productivity says the Institute of Alcohol Studies ..... not sure how they ever come up with these figures, but its a fair bet that this will seem like a small amount, when compared to the cost to the economy of the coronavirus.
