..... or so Thames Water (London's water supplier|), are fearing is a possible future.
Because unbelievably in the UK, people have been tapping the mains water supplies for 'clear oil'. Last year Thames recorded 734 pipes being illegally tapped, including a street cleaning firm that had rigged hoses to hydrants in London's Battersea area and elsewhere.
The problem has become so bad, that a squad of ex-police officers are hired to try and track these miscreants ... the Water Squad, have found that thousands of litres of water are lost to these thieves everyday. In 2017 cleaning firm Hydro Cleansing pleaded guilty to 18 offences in Croydon and Reading under, the Water Industry Act (WIA) 1991 after illegally connecting standpipes to the network. The company was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling almost £15,000.

26,247 feet (8,000 meters), below the sea surface, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, where the temperature is just 2 degree Celsius the pressure is 1,000 times greater than sea level, and to all intents and purposes its near pitch black ... its safe to say that its not a promising set of conditions for life.
But as we are discovering all the time, life finds a way. For this is the habitat of the Mariana Snailfish, the deepest dwelling fish so far discovered. The conditions at the bottom of the trench would actually flatten human beings or other fish species.
