Monsters Walk Among Us

In India, rape attacks have continued on a depressingly regular basis .....

.......despite the outcries, and apparently undeterred by the changes in the Indian law.

In 2015 Leslee Udwin, a Western female journalist and film maker, interviewed in jail some of the men involved, and uncovered a simply shocking undercurrent of misogynist views. None of the men interviewer for her documentary 'India's Daughter,' showed much if any remorse, and most were bemused or even outraged that they should even have been arrested for the most terrible of crimes.

Mukesh Singh, who was the driver of the bus and co-rapist with several others, of the girl raped on a Delhi bus and the murder of her boyfriend, which first brought this hidden crime to world attention, said that "A decent girl won't roam around at nine o'clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20 per cent of girls are good." .... this meant that people "had a right to teach them a lesson." .....

In any case he argued, if she hadn't struggled they wouldn't have killed her boyfriend. His final observation on the matter was, "The death penalty will make things even more dangerous for girls. Now when they rape, they won't leave the girl like we did. They will kill her. Before, they would rape and say, 'Leave her, she won't tell anyone.' Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl. Death."  ..... You may or may not (depending on your view on this matter), be relieved to know that this monster was hung to death on 20 March 2020, along with the others responsible for the bus attack.

His opinion and contempt for the victims was not an isolated one, Gaurav, who had raped a five-year-old girl said that "She was beggar girl. Her life was of no value." and if that wasn't bad enough the same opinions were pretty much evinced by some of the defence lawyers interviewed for the documentary.

ML Sharma (Lawyer): "In our society, we never allow our girls to come out from the house after 6:30 or 7:30 or 8:30 in the evening with any unknown person. You are talking about man and woman as friends. Sorry, that doesn't have any place in our society. We have the best culture. In our culture, there is no place for a woman."

AP Singh (Lawyer): Had stated on Indian TV "If my daughter or sister engaged in pre-marital activities and disgraced herself, and allowed herself to lose face and character by doing such things, I would most certainly take this sort of sister or daughter to my farmhouse, and in front of my entire family, I would put petrol on her and set her alight." .... he stood by that opinion in the documentary

Make no mistake, monsters walk amongst us and in numbers that would frighten us if we could see them .....
