Elephants Never Forget

In 2015, in the Chatra district, of north-eastern India, which is about 160km from Ranchi city .....

Desperate And Hungry Elephant Mother ...

... a lone female elephant had been digging the ground for 11 hours, and had not eaten.

The Elephant Was Digging Desperately .....

After a crowd had developed, at a safe distance as this was a wild elephant, one villager carefully approached and was able to see that her baby had fallen in a sandy ditch, and was unable to get out.

Her Baby Was Trapped In A Pit ... The Crowd Dug More Access

The mother in her desperation was actually kicking more sand in, while trying to rescue the baby .... so the local villagers distracted her with food on the back of a truck, and the rest were able to clear a better pathway in the sand pit, before the hungry mother had finished eating.

They then drove the truck away, and the mother elephant with no food to distract her resumed her rescue attempt ...

Mum To The Rescue .....

...but now with better access, she pulled the baby free, and the happy but exhausted couple walked away safely into the countryside.

Alls Well That Ends Well ....

Its not always bad news out of India at the moment .....
