When the divorce laws first liberalised in the 1960's in the UK, it was touted as a good thing for women ...

..... maybe it was for some, but it could be argued that for many it wasn't so great, as it left them poorer financially, and often bringing up baby alone.
Also as single motherhood became an increasing social problem, it created knock on societal problems that we still feel the consequences of today. This is particularly so in the lower working class, and Afro-Caribbean populations, where single women bringing up boys has, in some cases, not always turned out too well.
So the fact that yet another tweak to the UK's divorce laws has now come into force a while ago, that allows for 'No Fault' divorce, may not be greeted with overwhelming happiness in some quarters, because all the evidence of the past 60 years, is that children do their best inside a relationship comprised of their natural mothers and fathers who are married. They do increasingly worse as the home relationships move away from that ideal, with single parent households often one of the least happy outcomes.

The post title? ..... For those of you who know your 'The Pickwick Papers', by Charles Dickens, then a quote from Samuel Weller in the title will be no strange thing, for the single parents of the Victorian age were the widows. Or as Mr Weller would have called them 'Vidders' (widders, widdows). He famously advised Mr Pickwick not to get involved with them, which was sage advice as it turned out.
Perhaps we may find out that we could have done with similarly sage advice over this change .... we shall see.

Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
