Bullying Is Part Of Childhood

Since schools began, and I mean in antiquity, where many Greek and Roman children went to be taught ....

..... but certainly since Tom Brown's school days, bullying has been part of the experience.

Some children have an inherent mean streak in them, and others will back them to avoid being bullied themselves .... So it was no great surprise to find that a survey found that 1 in 10 (11 per cent) of secondary school pupils said they had missed school to avoid bullies.

14 per cent of the victims said that they would change their route to school, and 19 per cent avoided social media (a modern source of bullying), to try and lessen the chances of being bullied. 19 per cent even avoided 'friends' because of the issue.

The survey by The Anti Bullying Alliance, of 1,000 children in 2019 of secondary school age (11 - 16 or 18 if taking A levels), reported that in all 35 per cent had suffered episodes of what they perceived as bullying. The alliance asked the victims what they would like to see done. These included schools finding out how much bullying there was by secret surveys, and identifying location hotspots.

Sadly this is an issue that can be reduced, but never eradicated completely, as kids will be kids. Expulsions of the bullies would certainly impact attitudes, but schools have rarely done so.
