Since March 2026 Donald Trump has claimed a peace deal with Iran (on the US's terms of course) was imminent .....

.... even in this week's news ... on a large number of occasions.
In fact so often has he made these claims, only for the war to proceed without any apparent reference to these imaginary deals, that a veritable industry has developed, counting the instances.
Peace deal counting still rising:
In fact everyone has had a go. The highest estimate I've seen is 42 times since late March 2026, with other estimates available. In some instances, such as this week, Iran has flat out denied Trump's claims and been proved to be truthful .... in fact so far, only once have both agreed, and that was when the badly drafted Memorandum of Understanding was agreed, which the Iranians only signed because they thought it gave them some considerable advantages, particularly over the Straits of Hormuz, this MOU collapsed very quickly as fighting resumed.
How these many nonsensical claims by Trump, of imminent deals with Iran (who are often portrayed by Trump as begging, or pleading for a deal), are viewed by his MAGA supporters in the US, its hard to judge. His main public media supporter is Fox News, but their website more often leads with US domestic politics, in particular the forth coming November Mid-Terms, and the current candidate primaries deciding who the Democrat candidates in the Mid-Terms are going to be. The war is pushed onto a separate section, which you need to access for updates, its largely ignored or reported almost as an after thought on the home news section ... that may be a form of comment in of itself, as one can't help but think it would be front and centre of the home section if he won a fantastic victory.
My only other source of US right wing thought, is a news group that added me to their mailing list (I can't recall why this happened, and guess I my blog email must have been put on a mailing list ... in any case, its proved a useful insight into conservative MAGA thought). In any case, they also are obsessed with the mid-terms rather than the Iran conflict, and like Fox, they spotlight the so called 'Democratic Socialism' project and its, as they see it, "communist" adherents, who are sweeping the Democrat primaries and other elections, often removing mainstream Democrats in the process (and possibly their electability in a nationwide election) e.g. the New York mayor is anathema to conservatives, after he won the role this year.
Again, is that lack of discussion on the Iran situation a comment in of itself, on just how badly the war is playing in the US, or, is it really that in the US, this Middle Eastern crisis plays as a minor issue in American politics, where domestic issues hold total sway?
Sometimes its hard for non Americans, to understand the US absorption with naval gazing, rather than looking at the rest of the world. We assume that they see the world as we in Europe do. But they don't. They are a continent spanning country, and up until the First World War (and in the post war period up until 1941, the US was often following an isolationist foreign policy ... and in fact this is still a minor undercurrent in US politics today.
Even so, Trump's many false claims of imminent treaties, and general mishandling of the Iran war, as well as the poor economic performance currently affecting US voters, are obviously going to be factors in the forthcoming mid-terms elections in November .... especially if US still tied up in Iran, or has signed a bad treaty that's worse than no treaty or the Obama treaty.

The latest non negotiations with the US, where the US were noticeable by their absence, have resulted in an agreement between Oman and Iran over the Straits of Hormuz (details remarkably not leaked).
ReplyDeleteHowever Iran also issued some unlikely demands before the Straits are reopened.
1. The U.S. must never threaten Iran again.
2. The US must end the blockade.
3. Withdraw all military assets from the region.
4.Lift sanctions.
5. Unfreeze all Iranian assets, and
6. Compensate Iran for all war damages.
Good luck with those ... noticeably Iran links all those with just reopening the Straits, but not their Nuclear weapons program. The art of the deal. Iranian style!!
Trump opened a can of worms with this war. No one knows how it will end .... but I suspect badly. Thanks for the comment.
