Criminal Imbalances

Victoria Arthur a 36 year old junkie in a wheelchair was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 23 years.

She had stabbed a drug pusher to death in a row over money (£100) that the dealer had said that her lesbian partner owed. This was in Portsmouth.

Meanwhile in Leicester, Charlie Pearce a 17 year old boy, man, decided to celebrate his birthday by raping a stranger who he attacked in Victoria Park. After the rape he tried to kill the girl in her 20's, by smashing her over the head with a paving stone, and the took her handbag as a trophy.

His own parents shopped him to the police. His victim spent 2 weeks in a coma and will never be the same for the rest of her life. He admitted the rape, and got a life sentence (a life sentence of detention, rather than imprisonment because he is still technically a juvenile), with a minimum of 11 years .... this despite the judge describing him as "exceptionally dangerous".

But where is the equality of justice here?

It really angers me that what passes as justice in the UK is so uneven. The wheelchair woman is unlikely to pose a risk to anyone else except possibly drug dealers who threaten her lover. Mr Pearce will offend again when he gets out, and has given his victim a life sentence of disability. She should have the minimum of 11 years, whereas Mr Pearce should have had the minimum of 23 years imposed.

Sentencing has to reflect the gravity of the offence and be the same across the land. Charlie Pearce is a bit of scum of the lowest order. The fact that those naive fools who make up parole boards could let him (like the Jamie Bulger killer or John Worboys the taxi rapist), back out on the streets when he is just 28, should be of concern to everyone, and his parents.

If I was the father of that poor girl, I would do everything I could, to exact a terrible revenge on young Mr Pearce ... and that's what justice may come to be when sentencing is so erratic.

  1. A Pakistani descent man in Yorkshire mowed down 5 coppers after stealing a van whilst on drugs. Sentence 22 months. Two burglars in London get 8 years each despite there being no violence in their crimes.

There is no justice in the UK.

Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
