Battering Colin

I love the Scottish chip shops willingness to fry anything ....

Cuthbert And Colin - Can't They Be Besties?

.... and we have already discussed the Deep Fried Mars Bars and other culinary delicacies

So I was never going to miss on this story. Emanuel’s fish and chip shop in East Kilbride in Scotland has taken a cheeky swipe at the retail giants, Marks & Spencer, who recently started a legal action against the cut price shopping upstart Aldi, over their Cuthbert the Caterpillar product, which looked a bit like M&S's Colin the Caterpillar.

A battle that has not necessarily worked in Marks & Spencer's favour as the hashtag Free Cuthbert swept social media ... In late April, Aldi announced that it will be bringing a limited edition Cuthbert the Caterpillar back to stores soon ... and said in a Twitter post “Hey @marksandspencer can Colin and Cuthbert be besties?

Colin Battered - But Not Beaten

Emanuel’s joined the fray, on the side of Cuthbert saying that “It’s a wee bit silly but hopefully they’ll just cancel it and let (Aldi) do their thing," and by covering a M&S's Colin the Caterpillar birthday cake in batter, then frying it as part of a special promotion.

The idea came originally from one of their phone app partners, East Kilbride Eats, who came up with the promotion, wanting one of the chip shops on their app to take on the challenge of battering Colin, and getting on the Save Cuthbert promotion.

Ricky Brandon said that “We just decided we’d go for it and have a bit of fun with it – we had it on display there with a few people coming in and getting pictures with it. It was a wee bit easier than expected but I think I’d definitely make the batter a wee bit thicker for it next time. Maybe if I had cut it up into slices and battered them individually and then built the cake up that way.”

This is not their first rodeo when it comes to frying. They have previously battered Cadbury Creme Eggs, Mars bars, Maltesers, and bread rolls and chips – and also created a black pudding and haggis combo called Blaggis, which is new on the menu.
