Every now and then helpful cleaners make the news and this blog ...
Old Library Newmarket ...... |
... so the fact that a helpful cleaner has done it again, is always worth a cheer!
This time it wasn't in some foreign place, no this time it was in Newmarket, Suffolk, England. The library in the town had been closed, and was undergoing a deep Covid-19 clean (paper being a carrier of germs) in April 2020. Now with figures showing that the number of books borrowed from libraries in the year to March 2020, declined once again by almost 9 million year on year, to 166 million, its perhaps odd that they are reopening before the pandemic is completely clear ... but they were.
So the council cleaner moved in and gave the library a deep clean .... the job was as they say 'A Good Un,' and she left well satisfied with her endeavours. She had cleaned every book and every shelf, and re-stacked them in time for the grand re-opening after lockdown one ended.
Books Stacked By Size - Arty Style |
Unfortunately, the librarian was not so pleased with her handiwork, when they found that the well intentioned cleaner, had re-stacked the shelves in the aesthetically pleasing manner of order of height! Tallest books one end, and smallest at the other.
Bookshelves At Home Are Often Stacked By Size And Shape .... |
Now to be fair to the cleaner, this is the way we often stack books in our own homes .... mine are usually placed wherever I can squeeze them in, so it may not have occurred to her that libraries stack in a more ordered fashion.
Some Ilitterati Think This Is A More Neutral Book Display |
Also there have been some strange trends in book display recently, including the odd practice of placing books on shelves, spine first .... so maybe the cleaner was simply trying to set a new trend?
