Just An Ice Cream Folks

Now personally I think that the LGBT campaigns in the West have gone a bit too far and are no longer equality issues.

This Cake Provoked A Court Battle in Northern Ireland

... and I have posted in the past, on the controversy that the more aggressive promotion of this limited appeal lifestyle has caused ....

However. I would never try to reverse the equality and freedom afforded the LGBT communities in the West, and indeed increasingly elsewhere. So it is with the same eyes as the rest of world, that I look upon the extreme homophobic reactions, in those parts of the world where social enlightenment, or even just plain human tolerance have not yet reached.

The Islamic world, is the most obvious of these places (which is somewhat ironic, in a street culture of dominated by little boys and men in close contact, but hey ho). However a large number of African states hold similar public views as the Islamic states ..... but then again, so do some East European or Caucasus states such as Chechnya.

Rainbow Ice Cream?

This antipathy to LGBT lifestyles can take on some hysterical extremes .... in Russia for example Chistaya Liniya, a Russian ice cream maker, has been accused of promoting homosexuality after using a rainbow on its packaging. ... yes really. They were accused by Yekaterina Lakhova, the head of Russia's official Union of Women (a somewhat gay title in itself), who said the image amounted to "propaganda" for gay and lesbian relations, in a public video conference with President Vladimir Putin.

"They're quietly promoting these nice rainbow colours, using nice words, they're advertising an ice cream called Rainbow." This she claimed, could potentially make Russian children more accepting of the rainbow flag used by the LGBTQ community. Now homosexuality was actually decriminalised in Russia in 1993, but those deemed to be promoting "homosexual behaviour among minors" face fines of up to 500,000 roubles ($7,000). So there is fairly open discrimination against homosexuals in Russia, despite the legal decriminalisation.

In a later interview, Ms Lakhova (a former Russian MP) said: "I don't like the rainbow, just as I don't like the swastika." .... in response, Armen Beniaminov, who is vice-president of Chistaya Liniya said "Our company advocates traditional family relations, and categorically disagrees with Ms Lakhova. We believe that the rainbow is sunlight after the rain, not the LGBT flag."

Ms Lakhova's comments, provoked the most obvious retort led by the popular daily Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper, which suggested that Ms Lakhova might want to avoid looking at the sky after a shower, and that the rainbow must now be banned from appearing after it rains in Russia, and even that the Defence Ministry may be drafted in to fight any rogue rainbows. "Otherwise children will see them!"

In this mocking laughter, they are following a trend, after a poll in 2019 suggested that 47% of Russians supported equal rights for gay and lesbian people, with 43% against. Its hard to see what extremists like Ms Lakhova get from this nonsense (nor indeed Mr Putin), even in an election year, as they merely exposed themselves to popular humour at their expense.

.... after all its just a children's ice cream, and everyone can see that.
