Or as I could have said 'Juti ex machina' ("A Viking from a machine"), if you'll excuse my pig Latin .... Ingvar Orn Karlsson or as he is now known 'The Berserker', is a firefighter in the southern Biskupstunga area of Iceland. He was/is also the local candidate for the Nytt Afl (New Power) political party, in the 26th of May elections.
Unfortunately for him, he's not able to control that Viking ancestry as well as is expected of modern politicians these days, and was asked to step down from his candidacy for the Bláskógabyggð municipality.
This after an unfortunate incident in which he went on a rampage in a road digger. The police were called after reports that a man was behaving unusually whilst operating a two-tonne construction machine, and when they arrived at the scene they decided that "In view of the state of man, [his] driving and the general traffic there, it was decided to use a police car to stop him."
Now a two tonne road digger is not a machine that is easily stopped, and despite some brave efforts from the boys in blue, in which they attempted to block the berserker, he forced them off the road near Skálholtsvegur. Reinforcements arrived and they managed to take actions to topple to the digger over. Sadly the rogue Viking was injured in this manoeuvre and had to be taken to hospital by helicopter.
It is not clear whether the construction vehicle belonged to Mr Karlsson, and the Nytt Afl party leader Jon Snaebjornsson has called the incident "a human tragedy," but as it was too late under Icelandic election law to remove him from the ballot papers, the party asked him not to take his seat if he is elected.
However after sober reflection, and politics being what it is, after a suitable period of remorse they may change their minds. In the meantime Ingvar Orn has been unavailable for comment since the incident. Sadly as is often the case with these intriguing snippets of news, its not known if he won the seat or not, nor in fact the underlying reason for his drunken wild antics.
But it should be pointed out that in a different age, his manly deeds would have made ice-maidens swoon, and garnered him much manly admiration from his fellow berserker's.
