.... except when they aren't. We have gold ones in some towns to commemorate Olympic gold medal winners local to those areas. I seem to recall a double gold set in Edinburgh for Sir Chris Hoy's two golds.
However, these changes are only allowed when the Royal mail approves them, so they took a dim view when from January through to the end of March someone started painting mail boxes in the Temple Hill area of Dartford in Kent, different colours and designs. One was painted gold (although no gold medallists lived in the town), while others got a variety of designs, ranging from a Union Jack Pattern, through to Leopard Print.

But as the time passed the changes became more bold, with some painted to resemble Cadbury Creme Egg wrapping, and even Mr Blobby (a TV Character). As you might expect, some people liked them and said they brightened the town up as well as "brightening their day" while others said it was nothing more than "pure vandalism."
However, the empire struck back and the Post Office said that "We are restoring the affected postboxes to their original red," and the police arrested and charged 33 year old Danny Whiskin with criminal damage in relation to the vandalised mail boxes.
