The Runcorn Rumble

We have all been to weddings where there has been a bit of ill feeling in the air ....

Argy-Bargy At Wedding Receptions Is Not A New Phenomena

.... however normally, apart from a few muttered words, nothing usually spoils the happy couples big day.

But there are always exceptions to this. Such was the case on June the 26th 2019 when a wedding reception party was in full swing at the Daresbury Park hotel on the outskirts of Runcorn, England, when what can only be described as a full scale riot erupted. It was alleged that up to 50 people were reportedly involved in fighting during the reception.

A witness (who was not in the party) said that blood was all over the floor after it kicked off ... he told the local press that "It was all kicking off' inside. There were police everywhere, it was really bad. I could see it all happening out of my window, there’s still a massive police presence and it’s all cordoned off. There is blood all over the floor in the corridor.”

Dozens of officers were called to the hotel, with up to 30 police cars rushing to the area and Warrington Hospital even declaring a major incident, with senior management called in during the night to assist. When the police entered the hotel at around 11:30pm they found that the wedding party members had allegedly barricaded themselves inside the function room to prevent arrests being made .... needless to say this (if true), didn't stop the inevitable and the inevitable arrests were duly made.

Only three participants in the brawl were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and they were discharged either to the police or to go home later on, but 11 were arrested and charged with violent disorder. However what makes this more than just another stupid story about heavy drinking and bad manner, is that of the 11 arrested and charged, 10 were all from the same family ...  that has to be some sort of record.

The men who were charged are:

  •     Robert Reilly, of Bletchley in Buckinghamshire, aged 27
  •     Brian Stokes, of Crewe, aged 23
  •     Edward Joseph Stokes, of Crewe, aged 19
  •     Edward William Stokes, of Milton Keynes, aged 26
  •     Edward Stokes, of Crewe, aged 48
  •     John Steven Stokes, of Nantwich, aged 25
  •     John Stokes, of London, aged 21
  •     Michael Stokes, of Crewe, aged 54
  •     Stephen Stokes, of Northwich, aged 22
  •     Terry Stokes, of Winsford, aged 34
  •     Thomas Stokes, of Milton Keynes, aged 28

All plead not guilty and opted for a trial in November this year .... the exact reason for the incident has not been divulged in the press, and its not clear if the men were allegedly fighting each other, or attacking another person or persons.

All in all, not a lot of good news coverage for this 4 star hotel ..... and so its perhaps no surprise that I could find no statement from them on this story, apart from that they were assisting the police.
