Dino Evian

Its a fact that every drop of water on planet Earth contains a little bit of Dinosaur Pee, well according to scientists. This is because they were here for 186 million years, and the vast amounts of the piss that they squirted in that period, will have percolated down into the rocks, or made it into the oceans.

Watch A Surprise

I like wristwatches ... specifically vintage mechanical or 'hand driven' (wind up in UK) men's wristwatches, although any unusual watch attracts my interest, as illustrated below. I am always on the look out for 'that find', the lucky spot at a car boot sale, whereby I find a real minter, a hardly worn, classic men's wind-up, that's a real treasure. As you might have guessed, I am still awaiting that find .... but I live in hope.

Not that I haven't had any luck at all .... I have a bedroom drawer full of these wristwatches, which includes many vintage wind-ups, and included in this collection is my vintage 1970's boys/mens wind-up Timex, which I purchased for the princely sum of £10.00 ($15.00), and which was nearly mint. It was a great find, and I have a few other interesting finds from Eastern Europe, but just not that vintage Rolex, or whatever, that I daydream about.

'What's the attraction?' I hear you ask, after all they are not as accurate as quartz watches, and indeed many, especially the older 'vintage' wrist watches sold on auction sites or at car boot sale, are only good for a day or so, without the need for rewinding, and even then, often lose time during the day.

I can't really explain it, but the best I can do is to describe it as a touch of the past. Older watches (not the common Timex's etc which were factory made), were often hand made, or finished. They were adjusted and balanced by a craftsman and not by a factory.

My Latest Wristwatch Is Actually Not A Wind-up ...

A Bad Turn In The Road To Freedom

The recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, which once again was the centre of uncivil unrest by a community, which always seems to fall back on violence, and then blame the authorities for responding, are indicative of a lot more than the simplistic idea that 'whitey is always oppressing the black man'. It actually points directly to the question of what sort of civil communities the black populations really want to live in.

Edinburgh Report 2015

Its August .... so it must be festival time.

Yes, once again we at PC towers have decamped to Edinburgh to enjoy the fringe festival ... oh, and drink a few beers with old friends. So, just

Sleeping Trees

'Comedy, meets theatre, meets jazz-fusion. Sleeping Trees disembowel western and gangster movies' ... the version we saw was a well crafted play on westerns which kept audience attention, and with much laughing. Lots of knowing nods to the genre.

Adam Riches is Coach Coach

A pastiche of American college basketball. .... The 'Queen Dome Centaurs' battle the 'Courtyard Lizards' in the show that just so happens to be the greatest frickin' sports movie you ever done saw, live on stage! .... after some discussion we settled on a 4 out of 5 score.

Moby Alpha

A space parody of the book Moby Dick by American comedy duo 'Charles'. ... Occasionally a little flat, but otherwise good enough, with some funny nods at sci-fi classics. The helmets got special mention and we want to know where to buy them.

Crime Town

When I read this story I thought .... 'now there's a surprise' .... not.

Apparently, according to figures released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (another quango?): 'Scousers' (as residents of the port city of Liverpool in England are 'affectionately' known in some quarters), are up to five times more likely to to end up in hospital following a physical assault, than any other British city dwellers.

Its The End Of The World As We Know It

Will the last man out switch out the lights .... This is now the case for the universe, which to quote one researcher " ... will decline from here on in, like an old age that lasts forever. The Universe has basically sat down on the sofa, pulled up a blanket and is about to nod off for an eternal doze."

I really like that imagery .... '... an eternal doze'. Rather like something from a Discworld story by the late Terry Prachett.

The reason for this, is that all the evidence points to the fact that star formation peaked a few billion years ago and has been declining ever since, and we are now seeing a gathering decline in the total energy output of galaxies at three different ages. From this researchers were able to extrapolate that there has been a steady slump in total output, from 2.25 billion years ago to 0.75 billion years ago, the Universe's output apparently fell by about 40%.

The Universe Is Huge .....

One Mans Hero ...

One man's hero is another man's villain ..... take German soldier Otto Skorzeny. He was a hero to Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and apparently Irish Prime Minister Charles Haughey (as well as many in Irish Society), while an enemy to many others, especially in the Russian East.

Skorzeny Was Famous For His Exploits Such As Saving Mussolini.

When Do The Blinkers Fall Off

A Muslim illegal in Israel attacked and stabbed ten people on a bus .... and Izzat Risheq, a senior official with the Palestinian militant group HAMAS, praised the stabbing attack. Speaking from Qatar, he described it as "a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and terrorism against the Palestinian people".

I'll repeat that he said it was "a natural response" to attempt to kill ten people.

Pong Pants

Apparently 'Shreddies' (not the breakfast cereal), but a specialist clothing firm in Leicester (for my American visitors, its pronounced 'lester' not 'lay cess stir'), has decide to add to its growing range of anti-flatulence clothing ..... I know, the mind boggles that such a range of clothing was even devised, but they have.

They apparently already have a line of flatulence filtering, mens underpants and ladies knickers in production, after their successful launch in 2012.

These Are An Earlier Fart Underpants Design ....

No Stool Pigeon

Ah those pesky animal spies again .... what is it with Asians and the 007's of the animal kingdom, radio controlled sharks, squirrels with binoculars, vultures with cameras? We have had claims of spying from the lot, mostly from the nut jobs who are in power in the Middle East and South Asia.

So the latest story, that a wild pigeon was arrested in India on suspicion of 'spying' is not really a big surprise. It had been captured by a 14 year old boy, and defender of India's honour, near the village of Manwal, when he had spotted that it had an address and telephone number written on its tail, in what was apparently 'Pakistani' Urdu.

The Secret Message ... Not Hard To Decode.

"Tehsil Shakargarh, district Narowal" it said. ..... Shakargarh Tehsil, is a city in the north-east of Narowal District, Punjab, Pakistan, and it borders Jammu in India .....

Court Approved Grave Robbing

For over two thousand years, our Roman based legal system has accepted that after the payment of taxes and duties to the state, a person had the sole right to determine how the balance of their estate was disposed of after their death. Known as the “freedom of testamentary disposition” – the right to put your money where you like – it has been presumed as a safeguard against avaricious relatives by many Britons.

After all this position had been challenged countless times over the centuries in England, but had always been upheld in principal, with the odd tweak in favour of wives claims. In Scotland, there had always been some grounds for challenging a will if you were a surviving dependent. This is because we have slightly different legal systems, an inheritance from the Acts of Union with England in !707, and of course with Scotland heading for divorce from England inside the the next few years, they will no doubt diverge a lot more in the future.

Guns Across The Missouri

Noticeably the so called 'peaceful protest', in Ferguson, Missouri, was accompanied by looting and arson by many of the participants, and ended in an exchange of gunfire, with a black youth downed. Also noticeable was that a very large number of semi clothed young black males were facing the police off ... and that there were no elders, or persons of community responsibility in the photos.

Bang Er and Mash (or Spuds U Like)

You sometimes hear tales of wheat or other organic matter, germinating in strange parts of peoples bodies (although these stories are best treated with some scepticism), and its a fact that human beings are very 'inventive' in how they use fruit and vegetables. But occasionally you have to blink and ask are you having a larf?

On October 4th, 2014 it was reported that a 22 year old 'virgin' was rushed to hospital in Honda, Columbia, South America. She was complaining of violent abdominal pains, and at first the medics could find nothing abnormal, but when her symptoms persisted, a medic decided to root around, and discovered a mouldy vegetable inside her vaginal passage. It had apparently 'germinated' and sprouted roots .... it was these, and the consequent gas build up, that that were causing her pains.

The medics extracted the object without the need for surgery, and almost immediately the pains started to subside .... when asked what the potato (for such it was identified as), was doing there, she replied that her mother had told her that a potato located there would stop her getting pregnant.

Strange Contraceptive ... or Nasty Surprise?

Roboticide US Style

Headline: "Robbie The Robot Murdered .... Dr. Morbius held for questioning!" Well that would be the headline in a funnier world.

In fact it was 'hitchBOT', a rather static robot created as a 'social experiment' by Canadian researchers, who has apparently met his end, at the hands of persons or person unknown. The idea was to place hitchBOT at a defined starting point, with a sign taped to it, which indicated where it wanted to be transported to, and wait to see what happened.

The hitchBOT had a GPS locator on board, a camera that randomly snapped and uploaded photos about every 20 minutes, to document its travels, and it was also equipped with a somewhat limited capability to communicate with its fellow travellers, however this didn't stop it being looked after. Firstly in Canada, and then in Europe, where on these travels, it had attended a comic convention, and a wedding. It had its portrait painted in the Netherlands, and most bizarrely it spent an entire week with a heavy metal band .... all safely.

hitchBOT Was A Social Experiment.

Kissin Cousins

According to the latest research by the university of Edinburgh (and actually not so latest research, as I recall being told this decades ago), having a very diverse parental genetic background gives a child a better chance in life. The outcome of these liaisons are both taller and smarter. The research looked at the DNA of over 350,000 people worldwide and confirmed that the offspring of unrelated parents, were both lankier and more intelligent than the offspring of people who were closely related, such as being first cousins.

Famously, 'Kissin Cousins' were a feature of certain mountain folk in the Blue Ridge and Smoky mountains in the USA ..... so much so, that the film 'Deliverance', tarred an entire area with the 'inbred' epitaph. In fact, the US has mixed views on the practice .....

The Four Political Pygmies

First it was political colossus (well nearly), Tony Blair, then is it was clunker Brown, and then little Ed (instead of big Dave his brother), and now it seems it will be one of the pygmies.
