.... but that doesn't stop many of its people believing in and practising magic.
So in Banjarnegara in central Java, a local shaman Slamet Tohari had been plying his trade with some success. He had set himself up as a shaman after coming out of prison following a fraud conviction. His main magic business was apparently in performing the 'multiplication ritual,' as he had modelled himself on the famous (or is that infamous?) money multiplication shaman Mbah Slamet (Grandpa Slamet), who claims to be able to multiply 70m rupiah (£3,755) into 5bn rupiah (£271k).These money multiplication scams are incredibly popular in Indonesia, with many advertised on social media, apparently untroubled by the authorities, despite the fact that they are all frauds.
However things started to unravel for Tohari, when the son of one of his clients told the police that his father had not been seen since a visit to Slamet Tohari ..... the police authorities agreed to investigate, and uncovered a grisly scene at Tohari's plantation property, when they disinterred 12 human bodies, all aged between 25 and 50 years of age. Oddly none showed any outward signs of violence, and had apparently been buried within 6 months of their discovery.
It was later determined that after taking money from his victims, instead of multiplying their money, he would invite them to a final ritual during which he first sedated then poisoned them with cyanide. On 12 January 2024, Tohari was sentenced to death. One judge described his actions as an "extraordinary crime" which shook the social order of the community.
