X-Ray Specs

X-Ray Spec are or were a dream of many people at some point in their, well boys mainly .....

.... now apart from the obvious sexual motive, there were also dreams of being able to see through walls, bank vaults, and the cards held by gamblers at casino's etc.

All totally impossible of course .... but the reflection of childish daydreams and misunderstanding of how X-Ray's work, which means that many men still lazily fantasize that such a device could lead to sexual gratification or possibly wealth.

So the May 2023 arrest of three men from Kerala in Chennai, India caught my attention. They were arrested for trying to sell spectacles that would help the wearer see through clothes!! They weren't aiming them at kids as a kind of novelty toy (as the X-Ray specs of my youth were sold - in adverts in comics), no they were targeting businessmen. They would show them a video of how the spectacles worked to see through clothing, then take them to a "secret location" where the businessmen could try them out for themselves.

They had secretly paid for female models to pose nude in a darkened room and actually succeeded into conning at least three customers into each buying a pair of these wondrous spectacles. Not content with this scam, they were also charged with attempting to sell a "rice-pulling" copper vessel, which they claimed had been hit by a lightening bolt, and thus was imbued with special powers to bring the owner prosperity.

They were caught when one of the gang, who had swindled a local businessman in a promise to sell him antiques was identified by victim, who was then threatened with a gun. The man went to the police and the latest scam was then uncovered.

Now you might think that this case is unique, but no, in India in 2017, eight people were reported as being arrested for selling "x-ray" glasses to a member of the legislative assembly (MLA) that they claimed, enabled one to see through walls and the human body. As well as the obviously fake spectacles, they were also trying to sell a magic rod which could extract money from the ground.

Not one of the credulous Indians caught up in these scams, ever questions why anyone with a 'magic' prosperity vessel, or a rod that extracted wealth from the ground, would be selling them, or even need the money if they were real?
